Our distribution team members play a critical role in delivering our products to our customers safely, and efficiently while upholding Smithfield quality standards. To do this a variety of Powered Industrial Trucks are used daily by our team members to move, store, and load products for our customers. A skilled Mechanic in Powered Industrial Trucks Repair and Preventive Maintenance is important to ensure the equipment is ready for our team to use with little to no downtime.
The Mechanic will conduct routine maintenance and repairs on a variety of forklifts and material handling equipment, diagnosing mechanical and electrical issues, by providing efficient repairs and solutions. This position requires maintenance proficiency and skills with equipment such as Pallet Jacks, Standup and Sit-Down Forklifts, and Reach and Turret Trucks, among others. This position will be responsible for keeping the site Powered Industrial Trucks in safe working order. You will conduct inspections, make repairs, handle preventative maintenance, and troubleshoot problems while keeping logs of all equipment repairs and maintenance in CMMS. The Mechanic will primarily perform troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, repair, and provide technical support to the maintenance team including training to others.

Maintains company owned/leased Material Handling Equipment (MHE) which includes but not limited to Pallet Jacks, Standup and Sit-down forklifts, Reach and Turret Trucks by performing preventive maintenance along with diagnosing and repairing any issues found.
Will troubleshoot, repair, and recommend future services on Powered Industrial Trucks, including electrical systems, steering, hydraulic, braking systems, axles, hubs, tires, and wheels.
Performs repairs to MHE by removing, replacing, assembling, and installing parts and components. Involves electrical systems, steering, hydraulic, and braking systems, axles, hubs, tires, and wheels.
Ability to diagnose power equipment problems, and determine effective and efficient repair solutions, using new or repaired parts.
Corrects vehicle deficiencies by removing, repairing, adjusting, overhauling, assembling, disassembling, and replacing major assemblies, sub-assemblies, components, parts, or systems
Troubleshoots and identifies issues using various meters, testers, computers, and software
Enter maintenance history, plans, and accounts for labor hours in the SAP System.
Attends training to learn new technical information to stay current with latest equipment. Maintains an organized and safe work area.
Able to diagnose and repair mast and attachment components.
Verifies vehicle performance by conducting test drives, adjusting controls and systems
Communicates with Supervision on work order status completion and initiates next assignment timely
Performs all phases of preventive maintenance and creates timelines as needed for equipment in partnership with Maintenance leadership
Through routine inspection, identifies and schedules repairs before they become a more significant issue for the equipment
Follows an active safety awareness program including applying clean housekeeping practices to tools, equipment and facility.
Assists/trains other mechanics as required.
Incumbent will be responsible for understanding and complying with company EMS and safety policies and procedures in the performance of their job duties.
Respond quickly to emergencies, calling additional assistance as needed including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Identifies any forklifts that need repairs, removes unsafe equipment from the facility operating area and notifies the supervisor.

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and 1+ years of relevant experience; or 4 years’ direct experience in a mechanical maintenance or food manufacturing maintenance environment.
Vocational Diploma, Technical Diploma or associate degree from a technical maintenance or vocational school. (Preferred).
Manufacturing, automotive, military, or recent trade school graduates with applied skills are preferred.
A solid foundation of mechanical aptitude and ability along with knowledge of industrial electricity up to 480 volts would be preferred.
Forklift maintenance experience preferred.
Possess the ability to function effectively in a team environment and interact productively with all levels of team personnel and outside contractors.
Possesses general knowledge of all mechanical systems incorporated material handling equipment and makes diagnoses and repairs.
Ability to operate a forklift, genie lift or scissor lift or other powered industrial trucks (PIT).
Possesses general knowledge of all mechanical systems incorporated material handling equipment and makes diagnosis and repairs.
Basic computer skills.
Competent in the used of common hand tools
Able to use a multimeter to diagnose problems.
Able to operate hoisting and jacking equipment.
Welding experience preferred.
Willing to work occasional weekends as needed.
Ability to work well with others in fast paced, dynamic environment.
Ability to be respectful, approachable and team oriented while building strong working relationships and a positive work environment.
Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to read and execute work order, write daily reports, and translate equipment manuals.
