General Area of Responsibility

The Chief Engineer will be responsible for the operation and maintenance procedures of the main machines, power generation plants and auxiliary equipment that are inside the machine room, as well as those that are on deck, in order to guarantee the efficiency in the operation of all the mechanical equipment inside the tugboats of Svitzer Bahamas Ltd.

Specific Area of Responsibility:

The main tasks will be:

  • In charge of Tug maintenance on board in accordance with the planned maintenance schedule and budget.
  • Maintenance and repair of engine room and equipment or accommodation in a safe manner.
  • Supervision of personnel undertaking and assisting in the engineering function.
  • Responsibility for signing off on maintenance work completed.
  • Participation in safety training, including the training of other crew members.
  • Assisting other engineers as required.
  • Monitoring and review of relevant occupational health and safety standards and procedures and reporting as appropriate.
  • Comply with the regulations of the company safety management system HMS.
  • Ensuring day to day compliance with relevant environmental regulations.
  • Participation in operational improvement exercises and liaison with SVITZER management regarding improved operational procedures, leading to a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Daily correct use and maintenance of all machinery, safety and environment protection equipment.
  • The correct keeping of Engine Logbook and Oil Record Book (when applicable).
  • Preparation of maintenance and operational reports as required.
  • Comply with local, regional, national, and international legislation.
  • Responsible for all bunker and internal oil transfers according to Bunkering of Fuel and Oils and Internal Transfer of Bunkers or Oil Products.
  • Ensure the Planned Maintenance System is kept updated and is followed.
  • The Chief Engineer has the obligation to Stop Work whenever a task is unsafe (by personal judgement) and then inform the Master.
  • The Chief Engineer must know the procedure Proactive and Near Miss Reporting for the various type of occurrences that should be reported to the Chief Engineer or Master with the potential to cause injury, illness, pollution, defects, or damage. Chief Engineer is responsible for instruction.
  • Perform other ad hoc tasks as needed.

Required/Preferred Education 

  • Degree in Mechanical or Naval Engineering.

Training and Experience

  • More than 2 years of experience in similar position, preferable.
  • Technical degree in Industrial Mechanic, Diesel/ Hydraulic or related fields, preferable.
  • Capacity to perform level I maintenance to the equipment’s.
  • Fluent written and spoken English.
  • Safety environment awareness.
