Mission:

To work collaboratively with the product squad to deliver impactful, user-centered design solutions that balance usability, business objectives, and technical constraints. The designer will be a key part of the discovery process, working closely with the Product Manager and developers to solve user problems effectively and deliver valuable outcomes.

Responsibilities:

  1. Conduct user research and analyze user feedback to understand user needs and pain points.
  2. Collaborate with Product Managers, developers, and other stakeholders to define problems, validate hypotheses, and discover effective solutions.
  3. Facilitate the discovery process with the team, ensuring a collaborative approach to finding solutions while aligning with the Product Manager's decision-making authority.
  4. Design UX flows and UI details that solve customer problems within the constraints of time, capacity, and complexity.
  5. Work with the squad to deliver, measure, and iterate on solutions, maintaining a balance between quality, speed, and impact.
  6. Create consistent and effective designs aligned with business goals, without over-focusing on pixel perfection.
  7. Ensure design solutions are implemented in a way that supports the developer cadence and aligns with a consistent design approach.
  8. Communicate design decisions clearly and collaborate effectively across teams.

Outcomes:

  1. The product squad has a deep understanding of users’ jobs to be done, pain points, and needs through regular engagement and insights.
  2. Users experience a seamless and effective journey aligned with their specific jobs-to-be-done.
  3. Design artefacts (wireframes, prototypes, specs) are clear, actionable, and well-understood by developers and the Product Manager.
  4. Design solutions are visually appealing, easy to use, and in line with the OfferZen design system while allowing room for evolution.
  5. The product squad consistently delivers impactful product improvements that drive business outcomes.
  6. The design approach supports developer efficiency and consistency without requiring a fully built-out design system.

  • User Research and Insight Generation: Skilled at gathering and analyzing user feedback to generate actionable insights that guide design decisions.
  • Collaboration with Cross-Functional Teams: Works effectively with engineers, product managers, and other stakeholders to ensure designs are feasible, impactful, and align with business and technical constraints.
  • Facilitation of Discovery Process: Able to facilitate and contribute to the discovery process, involving the entire team while supporting the Product Manager in decision-making.
  • Prototyping and Validation: Creates prototypes at various fidelities to validate design solutions through user testing and stakeholder feedback, iterating based on insights.
  • User Experience (UX) Design: Designs intuitive user flows and interactions that effectively solve user problems without over-emphasizing pixel-perfect design.
  • User Interface (UI) Design: Produces UI designs that are high-quality, consistent, and aligned with the overall design system, focusing on usability and impact rather than unnecessary complexity.
  • Strategic Product Thinking: Understands the broader product strategy and ensures design work is aligned with business goals and user needs.
  • Effective Communication and Advocacy: Communicates design decisions persuasively to stakeholders and advocates for user-centric design that supports business outcomes.
  • Confidence and Independence: Demonstrates confidence and can work autonomously, given the lack of a dedicated Head of Design, while leveraging support from the VP of Product and peers.

Background and Personality:

  • Collaborative team player experienced in working in small, fast-paced environments.
  • Driven by user problems and creating effective, user-centered solutions.
  • Confident and open to feedback, comfortable with ambiguity, and capable of guiding design processes without extensive oversight.
  • Detail-oriented but balances aesthetics with functionality, speed, and impact.
  • 2+ years of experience in UX/UI design, familiar with tools like Sketch or Figma.
  • Has a portfolio showcasing both UX and UI design.

We're good at remote. We have office space in Cape Town and Amsterdam but we're working remotely most of the time. For this role, we need someone located in South Africa. It's more fun to be near our Cape Town hub office, but we have all the tooling and processes to operate very effectively remotely.  We also offer 20 days of leave a year which are available to use from the time you start.

We love to do fun stuff together including 6-monthly offsite sleep-over events, and monthly experiences like games nights, or even Sumo wrestling events!  There's a running club, a hiking club, a book club, two D&D campaigns...  And now we're remote we're experimenting with online games, and online escape rooms.
