The Opportunity...

8 month term (preferred):          Jan 2025 to August 2025

What will you do in this role?

The mechanical engineering co-op student will join a multi-disciplinary R&D team that is continually and rapidly advancing new products from conception to their fully-realized, mature state - deployed around the world as the foundation of the optical internet.

The team works on a variety of different products applied in optical communication networks: optical amplifiers, wavelength-selectable switches, optical channel monitors and highly-integrated circuit packs. In addition to designing the products, the team also designs the precision production tooling essential to build the products in volume. Creative, reliable tooling designs are developed, documented and built within tight schedules.

Responsibilities:

  • Participate in the development of precision production tooling designs.
  • Prepare engineering drawings of the required parts and assemblies using 3D solid CAD tools such as Solid Edge to develop fully-documented detailed mechanical designs.
  • Apply a solid knowledge of mechanical engineering and manufacturing philosophies to develop new solutions and to evaluate the merits and risks of alternative concepts.
  • Apply our mechanical engineering design process to compile design requirements, evaluate conceptual designs, deliver detail design documentation and evaluate performance of realized designs.
  • Participate as a positive team member, working effectively with colleagues to ensure that design choices which span multiple disciplines are balanced and optimized for the overall performance, manufacturability and cost-effectiveness of the tooling solutions.

We aim to provide a high-quality learning experience.  Depending on the aptitude and interests of the mechanical engineering co-op student, the role will provide opportunities to gain exposure to topics such as opto-mechanical product design, electronics packaging and the application of Finite Element Methods and Computational Fluid Dynamics to product engineering.

What experience will allow you the greatest success in this role?

Recommended Education:

  • 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year student in a Mechanical Engineering Bachelor’s Degree program;

Skills:

  • Demonstrated proficiency in producing part and assembly drawings compliant with ANSI drafting standards;
  • Proficiency in the use of a 3D solid modeling mechanical CAD tool such as SolidWorks or SolidEdge;
  • Ability to demonstrate an aptitude for detailed mechanical design;
  • Practical and theoretical knowledge of metal machining processes, design of machined parts, selection of engineering materials, structural mechanics;
  • Demonstrated ability to apply excellent design judgment and engineering skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to consistently apply attention to detail in pursuit of high quality.

Desired Qualifications

  • Knowledge of and ability to apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GDT) practices;
  • Experience with engineering document management and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems;
  • Practical and theoretical knowledge of a variety of fabrication processes: sheet metal, injection molded plastics, electronic assemblies, optical assemblies, Design for Manufacturability.
