GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) is seeking a highly motivated and experienced

(EHS) Site Lead to join our team. The EHS Site Lead will be responsible for overseeing and managing the EHS programs at the GSK Binney Street site, ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations and fostering a culture of safety and environmental stewardship. This role requires a strategic thinker with strong leadership skills and a solid background in EHS management within a manufacturing, pharmaceutical, or similar environment.

As the EHS Site Lead, you will direct and support Environment, Health, Safety, (EHS) and Security program at the GSK Binney Street Site to ensure a safe work environment, compliance with laws, regulations and GSK Standards, and ensure that EHS-related risks and impacts are effectively managed. Act as a champion for EHS issues across the site and work with leaders, managers, supervisors and other staff to help them improve EHS management and performance in their areas of responsibility. Develop and sustain programs, both technical and behavioral that support a Zero Accident site culture. The role includes strategic planning, tactical interventions and day-to-day support for operations. This role is a member of the Site Leadership Team and reports into Manufacturing Site Head.

EHS Program Management:

  • Lead the EHS vision, strategy and program which will drive improvement in the management of EHS risks and overall EHS performance and ensure alignment and compliance to local regulations and permits, and to GSK standards
  • Responsible for development and implementation of strategies in relation to the main EHS risks at the site and updating site risk register.
  • Conduct risk assessments and audits to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance with EHS standards.
  • Prepare strategic EHS plan and annual objectives, in line with the global strategy and site strategy; monitor performance and act to ensure that objectives and metrics are met.
  • Lead Site EHS Council to provide business updates and performance reports to site and above site functions

Regulatory Compliance:

  • Stay current with local, state, and federal EHS regulations and ensure the site’s compliance.
  • Prepare and submit required EHS reports and documentation to regulatory agencies.
  • Serve as the primary contact for regulatory inspections and audits, addressing any issues or non-compliance findings promptly.

Training and Education:

  • Develop and deliver comprehensive EHS training programs for site employees, contractors, and visitors.
  • Promote EHS awareness and best practices through regular communications, workshops, and training sessions.
  • Ensure all employees are knowledgeable about and comply with EHS policies and procedures.

Incident Management and Emergency Response:

  • Lead investigations into EHS incidents, accidents, and near misses to identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
  • Develop and maintain emergency response plans and conduct regular emergency drills to ensure preparedness.
  • Maintain a thorough incident reporting and analysis system to track trends and improve EHS performance.

Continuous Improvement:

  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement by identifying and implementing EHS best practices and innovations.
  • Collaborate with site leadership and cross-functional teams to integrate EHS considerations into all aspects of site operations and projects.
  • Monitor and analyze EHS performance metrics to identify areas for improvement and drive EHS excellence.

Leadership and Collaboration:

  • Responsible for providing leadership and guidance to site leadership by effectively planning, organizing, managing and directing the EHS resources ensuring that all processes, activities and improvement programs are fully compliant both with GSK Standards, local and US regulatory agencies.
  • Lead a high performing team of EHS professionals to ensure business impact and risks are understood and managed
  • Influence senior managers in the organization and be fluent in both business and EHS terms
  • Act as a role model for EHS excellence, demonstrating strong leadership and a commitment to safety and environmental stewardship.
  • Build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders to promote a collaborative approach to EHS management.

Site Security

  • Manage Site Security operations, including Incident Commander Role.  Coordinate and test local business continuity, emergency response, and crisis management plans.  Serve as primary contact for above site and external groups (e.g. regulators, local emergency services.)

Basic Qualifications:

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental or safety management, engineering or science.
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in an EHS role, with at least 3+ years in a leadership position within the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or manufacturing industries.

Preferred Qualifications:

If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:

  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), or equivalent certification.
  • Preferred: Relevant professional qualification (eg Masters in Safety, Industrial Hygiene or Environmental Management).
  • Member of relevant professional EHS institution (eg American Society of Safety Engineers, American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists, Certified Safety Professional) in order to stay current in the field.
  • Maintain a high level of integrity while balancing multiple priorities and responsibilities and meet the GSK Leadership Expectations.
  • Must be able to lead in a high complexity matrix environment, influence others to consider EHS principles in all decisions and champion the Binney Street Safety Culture.
  • Ability to communicate at all levels of the organization.
  • EHS fundamentals (e.g. management systems, risk assessment and various hierarchies of control) plus requirements of OHSAS 18001.
  • Process Safety (OSHA 1910)
  • GSK’s EHS Standards; Requirements and practical implementation of federal, state and local EHS legislation, OSHA, HAZMAT, DOT, RCRA, EPA and others.
  • Detailed knowledge of EHS issues most relevant to a biologic manufacturing and research and development facility, ie machinery, chemical agents, fire, ergonomics, occupational and environmental noise, workplace transport, waste, and effluent management.
  • Collection, analysis, and interpretation of EHS data for professional and lay audiences.
  • Knowledge of OSHA, DEP, EPA, RCRA, DOT, DPH, MWRA, NIH, or NFPA, and other laboratory regulations and guidelines.
