Overview:

This position is part of a team providing strategic direction and assistance to bank management regarding future bank supervisory and regulatory interactions and activities. The successful candidate will leverage an understanding of the supervisory landscape in which the bank operates, applying that knowledge to actively prepare the firm for near term and future supervisory events. Candidates will also analyze emerging regulatory risks, trends, and themes and setting the forward plan for regulatory preparedness. This position will also advise and as needed, apply expertise to remediation efforts to ensure successful resolution of regulatory findings.  This role will involve a wide array of regulatory topics matters and will provide important consultation and guidance to senior management and Regulatory Affairs management                                                                                                       

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide expertise and guidance to management regarding regulatory/supervisory expectations, supervisory activities, and regulatory developments.
  • Evaluate the calendar of upcoming supervisory activities and lead and advise management in preparing for upcoming examinations.
  • Maintain knowledge of recent and anticipated changes in supervisory agency priorities and strategically apply that knowledge to identify any needed readiness/gap assessments.  
  • Work with stakeholders to ensure regulatory expectations are understood, advise on assessments vs. expectations, and support/opine on management efforts to address any gaps.
  • Maintain an understanding of regulatory and supervisory activities across the firm.
  • Prepare senior management for regulatory interactions and participate in drafting communications with supervisors.
  • Assist other members of Regulatory Affairs where they have issues and need a regulatory/supervisory perspective.
  • Advise on remediation efforts to ensure successful resolution of regulatory findings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.
  • Adhere to applicable compliance/operational risk controls in accordance with Company or regulatory standards and policies.
  • Promote an environment that supports diversity and reflects the M&T Bank brand.
  • Maintain M&T internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by external regulators as applicable.

Scope of Responsibilities:

This position assists in providing strategic direction and advice on regulation/supervision on a firmwide basis, partnering with cross-functional working teams that include all three lines of defense.

Managerial/Supervisory Responsibilities:

May need to manage other Regulatory Affairs personnel, as well as contributors from other parts of the Bank, in the design and implementation of projects and regulatory exam efforts and will need to co-manage the Regulatory Monitoring function.

Education and Experience Required:

Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Finance, Business or related discipline, or four (4) years of audit, regulatory or risk management experience specifically within the banking industry in lieu of degree.
Minimum seven (7) years relevant work experience.
Working knowledge of bank supervisory processes or experience working with bank regulatory matters.

Demonstrated knowledge of financial principles and regulatory and compliance issues related to the banking industry.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite of products, especially PowerPoint, Excel and Word.

Education and Experience Preferred:

  • Ability to work with other to assess and address gaps in supervisory expectations.
  • Ability to strategically plan for coming regulatory/supervisory events and developments.
  • Confidence to challenge management where needed.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of banking principles and banking products.
  • Advanced critical thinking skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite of products, especially PowerPoint, Excel and Word.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, ability to communicate in an articulate and professional manner.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to convey complex and/or nuanced concepts in an effective and understandable manner.
  • Experience benchmarking firm practices vs. supervisory expectations.
  • Experience working in bank supervision at a regulatory agency.
  • Experience in enterprise risk management or in governance and controls of a large US banking institution.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills.

Physical Requirements:

Travel may be required in minimal instances.
