We are seeking a skilled Data Scientist – Mining Operations who will play a crucial role in our mission to deliver industry-leading performance in safety, operational excellence, and reliability within our mining operations. We are looking for someone who can take data insights beyond the dashboard, driving practical solutions and opportunities within mining operations, helping to turn insights into actionable improvements.Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent work experience
Minimum 3 years of progressive experience in data analytics
Experience in mine operations, with a strong preference for open-pit mining environments
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with an emphasis on diagnostic analytics and translating data into actionable insights
Proven experience working with databases (SQL Server, PostgreSQL), data warehouses (Synapse SQL pool, Snowflake), and data lakes (Parquet, Delta-parquet in ADLS v2 storage)
Proficiency in SQL, DAX, Python, and Databricks for data manipulation and model development
Excellent collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey technical insights to non-technical stakeholders
Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities effectively, working in a fast-paced environment
Responsibilities
Conduct in-depth data analysis to identify trends, patterns, and actionable insights that drive decision-making in mining operations
Develop and maintain high-quality data products and dashboards, ensuring stakeholders have access to near real-time data for informed decision-making
Leverage data science techniques, including predictive modeling and machine learning, to provide insights that improve operational efficiency and performance
Promote a data-driven culture within the organization by advocating for data utilization in day-to-day operational decisions
Collaborate with key stakeholders across the organization to identify opportunities for operational improvements through data analysis
Stay current with evolving data science techniques, tools, and best practices, integrating them into the workflow to continuously enhance analytical capabilities
Location and other Key Details:
This is an office-based role. You will work out of our Calgary head office, located in the Suncor Energy Centre at 150 – 6th Ave S.W
Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday, with the potential for extended work hours based on business needs
Our business professional roles follow internal compensation guidelines, and the pay band will generally be based years of experience and scope of work
