Position Purpose:

Researches and interprets insurance laws pertaining to division products form filings and obtains approval from the various state insurance departments. Communicates impact of insurance bulletins, circulars, and directives to appropriate departments, and ensures compliance with all laws and regulations.

Logistics:

This is a full-time position (40-hours/week) Monday-Friday 8:00am – 5:00pm working on-site at 4101 Percival Rd. Columbia SC, in an office environment.

What You’ll Do:

  • Research insurance statutes, regulations, and bulletins for policy form filings (46 jurisdictions). Prepares formal contract filings and secures insurance department approval. (Researches state and federal statutes and regulations (including ERISA) impacting current specialty products. Prepares new product filings, and makes appropriate revisions to stop loss, limited benefit health, association group medical, and small group health products in response to insurance department objections. This function involves making a determination as to whether a revision is necessary in response to objections or whether to rebut the requested change. Prepares and distributes status reports to appropriate company departments.) Performs preliminary research on state and federal requirements pertaining to new market opportunities. (Researches state and federal legislation and its impact on emerging market opportunities. Recommends appropriate course of action in response to research results. Advises management of potential problem areas pertaining to emerging opportunities and current specialty products.)
  • Assists in drafting marketing, reinsurance, and administrative agreements. Reviews and assists in drafting agreements pertaining to specialty products. Identifies contractual deficiencies in written agreements and recommends appropriate revision. Coordinates the review of all contracts with Companion's legal staff, if necessary.
  • Prepares, maintains, and files required reports and corporate documents pertaining to specialty products. Prepares and files reports and listings pertaining to specialty products required by various state insurance departments and federal agencies. Ensures all such reports are filed timely.
  • Communicates impact of Insurance Department bulletins and federal opinions to compliance manager and specialty product staff and prepares response when required. Communicates the compliance department's summary of pertinent Insurance Department bulletins, circulars, and directives and all federal opinions and directives to appropriate company personnel. Provides clarification regarding technical interpretations.
  • Maintains appropriate files. Receives, logs, and distributes complaints (Insurance Department and consumer) pertaining to specialty products for response. Follows up to ensure timely response. Develops, updates, and maintains procedure manuals to ensure maximum job performance and timeliness.
  • Assists other areas. Research state insurance statutes, regulations, bulletins, and NAIC models as requested by compliance manager, Companion's legal department, and specialty product staff.

To Qualify for This Position, You’ll Need:

Required Education:

  • Associate's Degree

Degree Equivalency:

  • An extra 2 years of job-related work experience for a total of 4 years required experience. (Please see Required Work Experience).

Required Work Experience:

  • 2 years of experience in insurance, compliance, and research.

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Basic knowledge of insurance statutes and regulations.
