Position Summary

The Executive Director for Marketing Strategy and Account Services plays a lead role in developing and implementing effective marketing strategies to drive business growth and achieve organizational goals for WashU Medicine, one of America’s most prestigious academic medical institutions and biomedical research enterprises.

In partnership with the Assistant Vice Chancellor of Marketing Strategy, brand, creative, and business leadership, the role helps create the future of the WashU Medicine brand. Key stakeholders include Department Chairs, Division Chiefs and Faculty Practice Plan leadership to grow the existing business, identify new and organic growth opportunities, and solve complex problems.

The work promotes clinical, research and education services as well as overall reputation building at the local, regional and national levels. The position involves use of market research, industry trends and consumer behavior insights in the development of marketing plans and integrated campaigns that align with business strategy and are adjusted based on performance and real-time business needs. The position requires intense, ongoing collaboration with core marketing functions (brand, creative, digital and analytics) as well as with key stakeholders throughout the organization. Success in this role is dependent on strategic thinking, a commitment to creativity and problem-solving, and a dedication to developing strong partnerships.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Essential Functions):

  • Understands business-driving needs of WashU Medicine and develops strategic marketing and communications plans and programs for internal clients and external partners to grow the existing business, identify new and organic growth opportunities, and solve complex problems.

  • Provides leadership-level counsel and collaboration as a marketing thought leader while also establishing and maintaining relationships with stakeholders (department chairs, faculty/researchers, etc.) to support business needs.

  • Recruits, mentors, and motivates a high-performing team, functioning as an accessible, inclusive and relatable creative leader.

  • Serves as a subject matter expert, knowing how target audiences are reached today, staying current on industry trends, and bringing forward new promotion and engagement opportunities.

  • Establishes and implements marketing campaign budgets to support clinical department needs.

  • Supports ongoing growth of WashU Medicine’s reputation locally, regionally and nationally.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a marketing discipline.
  • Experience in the healthcare sector, including clinical marketing experience.
  • Industry-respected marketing leader with 8+ years of experience crafting marketing and communications programs and campaigns that deliver meaningful business impact.
  • Breadth of experience across B2B and B2C marketing strategy and planning, brand strategy, customer segmentation, analytics and digital marketing, integrated campaign management, and CRM.
  • Ability to drive measurable customer and stakeholder engagement and growth in support of the organization’s business strategy.
  • Demonstrated experience in conceiving, implementing, and evaluating strategic programs to achieve established goals.

PREFERRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • MBA or graduate degree.
  • Advanced market research and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated experience building multi-disciplined marketing teams.
  • Experience with academic medical center marketing.

DECISION MAKING AND IMPACT:

  • Responsible for decision making that involves WashU Medicine marketing, including hiring and team expansion and team professional development.

FINANCIAL/OPERATIONAL IMPACT:

  • Establish and implement marketing campaign budgets to support clinical department needs.

CONTACTS:

Internal:

  • Ongoing communication and relationship-building with clinical department/division heads, key staff members and marketing partners across the organization to facilitate growth-driving needs.
  • Ongoing communication and relationship-building with affiliate partners for alignment on marketing strategy and in-market activity.

External:

  • Communication with creative and media agency partners, as needed, for strategic direction, review and approval.

SUPERVISION:

Given:

  • Initial direct report will be Director of Marketing Strategy & Account Services, with more to come as team expands.
  • Indirect supervision will also be required, working in close partnership with marketing partners and other clinical stakeholders that sit within various departments across the organization.

Received:

  • Weekly status meetings with supervisor for project status updates and ongoing performance discussions

Salary Range

$110,300.00 - $194,200.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
