Job Title: Accounting Associate

Salary: £33,780 - £38,000 (Depending on experience)

Location: Peterborough - 3 days a week in the office

Job Summary

To independently perform staff level accounting functions that deal with cost accounting and business analysis issues of normal complexity to support business processes and provide further experience with Caterpillar cost accounting and decision support practices

Job Responsibilities and Duties:
The Accounting Associate will be provided with the necessary tools and training to allow them to become a contributing performer, performing accounting work that supports business processes. Additionally, this position will:

  • develop an expanded understanding of Caterpillar’s business and accounting practices, systems and procedures

  • apply accounting knowledge

  • participate in teams


What You Will Do:

In the role you will be exposed to a variety of accounting functions and will perform a high level and broad range of analysis work. The Accounting Associate will review clerical input, advise salaried employees and entry-level accountants, generate reports, and provide related commentary.

The Accounting Associate will review and validate relevant data and data sources, analyse information, and provide feedback. Incumbent works on challenging, low to medium risk issues and makes decisions and recommendations as appropriate. Work will be directed by an accounting supervisor primarily through review of progress and results.

Possible areas of responsibility are varied, including:

  • normals and machine rate development

  • abnormals identification & reporting

  • operations and/or product group budgeting and expense analysis

  • standard and current cost grief resolution

  • current product cost monitoring

  • establishing and monitoring target costs


The Business Analyst will demonstrate knowledge and ability to independently handle accounting issues. They will demonstrate good communication skills and have an expanded knowledge of Caterpillar’s businesses, products, suppliers, and customers.

What You Have:  

  • Education/Experience: Experience of working within an accounting function. Financial qualifications are desirable (AAT, CIMA etc)

  • Business Acumen: Knowledge of business concepts, tools, and processes that are needed for making sound decisions in the context of the company's business; ability to apply this knowledge appropriately to diverse situations.
    Level Basic Understanding:

  • Effective Communications: Understanding of effective communication concepts, tools and techniques; ability to effectively transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through the application of appropriate communication behaviors.
    Level Working Knowledge:

  • Managing Multiple Priorities: Knowledge of effective self-management practices; ability to manage multiple concurrent objectives, projects, groups, or activities, making effective judgments as to prioritizing and time allocation.
    Level Basic Understanding:

  • Problem Solving: Knowledge of approaches, tools, techniques for recognizing, anticipating, and resolving organizational, operational or process problems; ability to apply knowledge of problem solving appropriately to diverse situations.
    Level Basic Understanding:

Additional highly desired skills include:

  • Experience of accounting within a manufacturing environment and/or global matrix organisations.

  • Experience of data analytics and visualisation tools such as MS PowerBI, MS PowerApps, or Alteryx
