About the team:

The Dice Engineering organization spans multiple product-focused teams. We've made deliberate, opinionated choices about our stack — and our developers will tell you the experience shows:

  • Backend: A modern backend platform built in Node.js / TypeScript (HonoJs, Zod) — fast, opinionated, and a platform our engineers genuinely enjoy working in
  • Frontend: A Next.js platform serving over 800 million requests a month — built for scale, consistency, and developer speed
  • AI: We're actively building with Generative AI to improve product capabilities and developer productivity, and treating it as a first-class engineering priority

We're in an exciting phase: shipping meaningful product at pace, migrating off legacy systems that have held us back, and continuously raising the bar on developer experience and tooling.

About the Role:

We are seeking a Director of Engineering to lead multiple teams and increase the rate of meaningful, customer-visible product outcomes. This leader will manage engineering managers and senior technical leaders, drive milestone-based execution, and ensure teams deliver predictable, business-impacting results. Success in this role is measured by shipped outcomes, improved delivery velocity, and stronger cross-functional alignment.

You will raise the performance bar across teams, strengthen manager effectiveness, and make architectural and platform decisions that simplify systems and compound delivery speed over time. This includes reducing legacy friction, driving adoption of AI-assisted engineering tooling where it improves efficiency, and maintaining cost discipline without sacrificing reliability. Strong technical judgment and experience managing managers are required

What You’ll Do:

Delivery and execution

·       Driving predictable, milestone-based delivery of customer-visible outcomes across your teams

·       Removing the platform, process, and legacy friction that slows teams down

·       Using data to improve delivery effectiveness and make sound decisions under ambiguity

·       Maintaining cost discipline without sacrificing reliability or velocity

Technical direction

·       Making architectural and platform decisions that simplify systems and accelerate delivery over time

·       Bringing strong enough technical depth to evaluate tradeoffs, challenge assumptions, and guide Staff+ engineers on complex problems — even without being hands-on day to day

·       Establish standards, governance, and ROI targets for AI-assisted engineering tools, ensuring adoption meaningfully increases velocity, quality, and cost efficiency.

People and organization

·       Managing and developing 4-6 engineering managers and staff engineers with clear accountability for outcomes

·       Building leadership depth — particularly among Staff+ engineers who can drive cross-team impact

·       Setting high performance standards and addressing underperformance directly and fairly

·       Build and sustain a culture of psychological safety, direct feedback, and high accountability, ensuring teams feel empowered to challenge ideas, surface risks early, and continuously raise standards.

·       Own engineering vendor relationships and performance, ensuring external partners meet delivery, quality, and cost expectations aligned to company standards.

Cross-functional partnership

  • Aligning engineering delivery with measurable business outcomes
  • Communicating trade-offs clearly to non-technical stakeholders
  • Scaling your impact by operating effectively through managers and senior technical leaders
  • Partner with cross-functional leaders to define strategic priorities and evaluate multi-quarter roadmaps

What Success Looks Like:

Within the first 6–12 months, you will have:

  • Increased the rate of meaningful, customer-visible product launches
  • Improved quarterly delivery predictability and milestone discipline
  • Reduced platform and legacy friction that slows teams down
  • Strengthened adoption of AI-assisted engineering tools and standards
  • Raised manager effectiveness and accountability across teams
  • Improved cost efficiency without sacrificing reliability or delivery velocity

Qualifications

Required

  • Experience leading engineering organizations through multiple phases of growth, scale, or transformation
  • Experience managing engineering managers or leading multiple teams with distributed ownership
  • Experience overseeing 15+ engineers across multiple teams
  • Proven track record delivering complex, cross-functional initiatives
  • Strong architectural and systems design fluency
  • Demonstrated ability to raise performance standards within teams
  • Experience balancing speed with long-term technical quality

Preferred

  • Experience leading platform migrations or large-scale refactors
  • Experience in SaaS or marketplace environments
  • Experience implementing AI-assisted engineering tooling
