Position Summary

The resiliency of our R&D operating model is critical to ensuring delivery of transformational medicines to patients and the long-term sustainability of our pipeline. Global threats (e.g., cyber, natural, geo-political, social, supplier) heighten the need for a highly resilient global R&D operating model. The Head of R&D Business Continuity & Crisis Management (BCCM) will be the architect, steward, and global R&D leader for this critically important capability.

The ideal candidate will be a results-oriented leader with relevant BCCM experience/expertise and a record of accomplishment of defining, implementing, and cultivating organizational capabilities. This role requires a visionary leader who will improve the overall resiliency of our R&D operating model inclusive of our R&D sites, processes/technologies, personnel, culture, and key customers/partners (e.g., Clinical Investigator Sites). When needed, the candidate will also serve as a response lead for crises or critical events. This individual will be a people manager for a hybrid team of direct reports and contractors (as needed).

Key Responsibilities

R&D BCCM Capability Head

  • Steward and deliver the vision and strategy for our BMS R&D BCCM capability (embedding best practices while also ensuring it is fit-for-purpose for the unique needs of Research, Drug Development, BMS enterprise partners, and external stakeholders.)
    • Ensure alignment of our R&D BCCM program vision, priorities, and plans with those of our partners in the BMS Enterprise Resiliency program, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, Facilities, Quality, IT (Cyber), and Third-Party Risk Mgmt
  • Lead the planning and execution of all BCCM policies and procedures (e.g., completion of business impact assessments, design/planning/execution of a robust resiliency testing program, and supporting our Third-Party Risk Management controls, etc.)
  • Architect and drive a multi-year BCCM roadmap to improve our capability maturity, effectiveness, and efficiency; includes obtaining endorsement by the BMS LT and Research/Drug Development Heads
    • Partner with the Process Owners to identify and implement efficient and effective improvements
    • Partner with Research Site Leadership Teams to establish site-based plans for critical operations
    • Oversee a fit-for-purpose training and culture plan to ensure all parties understand their role in the R&D BCCM program and to cultivate an org/culture that values, prioritizes, and enables R&D resiliency
    • Scan marketplace (both biotech and non-pharma) to continuously identify best-in-class business continuity and resiliency capabilities
  • Lead and develop staff to achieve growth and attain established professional goals

R&D Crisis Response Leader

  • Actively represent R&D on the BMS Business Resiliency PMO and Crisis Event Response Team (CERT), as required
  • Lead or facilitate the R&D-related response teams for critical events impacting R&D
  • Drive proactive continuous improvement of our event response plans to embed efficiency/productivity improvements

Qualifications & Experience

  • BA/BS degree required; advanced degree preferred
  • Certified Business Continuity Professional (desired) or track record of achievement in business continuity/resiliency (preferably in pharma/biotech R&D)
  • 7-10 years of pharma R&D industry experience preferred
  • Successful track record of achievement in the following areas:
    • Crisis/event response leadership (Geo/Political, Pandemic, Natural Disaster, Cyber)
    • Business continuity/resiliency risk & issue management
    • Converting complex challenges into clear plan of actions and/or driving large cross-functional enterprise initiatives to deliver intended business outcomes; problem solver and facilitator
  • Exceptional cross-functional / matrix / project leadership skills
  • Autonomous and a strong developer of effective partnerships and relationships with all levels
  • Strong people leader and champion
  • Very strong written and verbal communication skills, including exec presentations
