POSITION SUMMARY:

CVI Laser Optics manufactures optics, including fabrication of optical components and the deposition of thin films to create optical coatings.  This position will be responsible for manufacturing engineering support for optical fabrication at CVI.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

As it pertains to the Optical Component Value Stream, including but not limited to:

  • Translates customer specifications into procedures to be performed by the department.
  • Leads technical support and guidance to the production team, coordinating with other engineering team members as required. Trains operators and technicians.
  • Designs and tests fixtures, tools, prototypes, and other production support items.
  • Creates, maintains, improves, and reviews technical documentation, such as drawings, design records, and work instructions.
  • Creates new, and modifies existing, product BOMs and routings in ERP system.
  • Troubleshoots existing and new processes and equipment. Conducts root cause analysis and develops effective countermeasures.
  • Identifies and drives continuous improvement to optimize manufacturing processes for maximum efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and quality.
  • Investigates and evaluates next generation optical shaping, grinding, and polishing technologies.
  • Performs cost/benefit analysis and maintains an optical fabrication equipment roadmap.
  • Supports, and in some cases leads, CVI’s Production Approval Process for product development.
  • Creates teams and coalitions across functions to successfully execute projects.
  • Creates and manages timelines for projects.
  • Establishes, follows, and enforces all safety regulations.
  • Effectively communicates change at all levels in organization.

CREDENTIALS AND EXPERIENCE

Required:

  • B.S. or higher in mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering, industrial engineering or an equivalent field.
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks or other 3D CAD system to fulfil the Job Duties and Requirements.
  • Experience successfully managing multiple tasks both of similar and varying priority.

Preferred:

  • 2+ years’ experience in high-tech manufacturing engineering.
  • Experience in successfully executing root cause investigations and creating effective countermeasures.
  • Working knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) per International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards.
  • Experience in scientific programming (such as LabView, Python, MATLAB, or equivalents)
  • Statistical data collection, analysis, and solution implementation experience.
  • Process flow, Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), and/or control plan development experience.
  • Lean Six Sigma certifications or use.
  • Experience with New Product Development (NPD) stage gate processes.

PHYSICAL CLASSIFICATION:

Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Ability to:

  • Operate computerized equipment and perform calculations
  • Bend as is necessary for sitting, using computers, using the telephone, and computer mouse
  • Demonstrate eye-hand coordination
  • Operate testing and measuring equipment
  • Bend as is necessary for lifting from waist to operate testing equipment
  • Apply force to adjust and operate testing equipment, turn knobs and cranks
  • Manipulate fragile parts into and out of equipment to measure size and shape
  • Grasp objects in order to turn, wipe, adjust instrumentation and safely use sharp instruments
  • Twist and turn wrists and forearms to perform inspection of optics and to operate testing equipment and computer
  • Bend at the neck to perform inspection and testing of optics and related equipment
  • Perform legible written communication.
  • Ability to work in a Class 1000 and/or airborne molecular contamination (AMC) clean room environment wearing appropriate PPE.      
  • Ability to work effectively and safely with chemicals wearing appropriate PPE.
