Position purpose:

Reporting to the Associate Director, Pension Plans and Benefits, and as a primary point of contact for both internal and external inquiries, the Analyst, Pension Plans and Benefits ensures adherence to University's customer service standards in the pension and benefits sector. The incumbent provides detailed information to plan members, handles inquiries and complaints with diplomacy and efficiency, and supports team projects. The incumbent executes tasks such as estimating retirement benefits, administering insurance plans, and managing confidential employee data while complying with relevant regulations and collective agreements.
 

In this role, your responsibilities will include:

  • Customer Service : Review, evaluate and respond to requests from active, retired and deferred participants regarding retirement plans, transfers of service, buyback of pension service, survivor benefits, enrollment in pension and benefit plans, processing of insurance claims, changes to personal information, as well as any miscellaneous requests that arise. Uses discretion and judgment to determine the correct course of action and resolve the situation or redirect to the appropriate party. Conducts meetings with active and retired employees, survivors, and representatives, providing detailed retirement plan information, addressing survivor benefits, insurance claims, and inquiries regarding pension and benefits in retirement. Assists in communication development for pension plan members and delivers bilingual presentations and webinars on pension and benefit plans.

  • Pension Plan Administration & Group Insurance Administration : Responsible for the administration of pension payments and administration of all files pertaining to the deaths of pensioners. Calculates pension benefit entitlements and prepares paperwork for survivor benefits in the event of the death of retired or deferred employees. Communicates with families, survivors, and representatives to request necessary documentation, liaises with Canada Life to ensure the payment of life insurance benefits and set up of ongoing survivor coverage, and prepares documents for the set-up of monthly survivor payment. Administers group insurance benefits, maintaining accurate data for eligibility purposes, communicating with insurance carrier about changes or anomalies in employee files which impact the administration of group insurance. Consolidates reports, calculates premiums, sends related communications, and manages incoming enrollments and requests relating to annual APTPUO insurance enrollment campaign. Administers, analyses and controls change to pension data and personal information pertaining to retirees and survivors/beneficiaries’ life events (marriage, marriage breakdown, death, dependent child, etc.). Calculates pension benefit entitlements and prepares statements resulting from various events that may contain complex mathematical calculations (retirement, death, divorce, transfer) in accordance with the Pension Plan text, Pension Regulations, and Tax Legislation, for all members of the pension plan. Reconciles data against employee files to ensure accuracy, and shares information with pension team members for wider use in other functions. Identifies anomalies in files affecting survivor benefits, implements solutions in compliance with regulations, and consults with the Associate Director. Analyzes Workday changes weekly, corrects accounts, and maintains accurate data for benefit administration, coordinating with relevant sectors.

  • Administrative support & Information Management : Supports special projects and team members in pension and benefit plan administration, including document organization and database management. Maintains accurate records and addresses anomalies to ensure smooth administration of pension and insurance plans.

What you will bring:

  • 3 years’ experience in the administration of pension benefits and in performing related financial activities.

  • Knowledge and experience relating to defined benefit pension plans and defined contribution pension plans, human resources administration, group benefits administration, finance or related fields acquired through postsecondary education (college or university degree) or equivalent experience.

  • Accreditations in Pension Plan Administration Certificate (PPAC), Certified Employee Benefit Specialist (CEBS) or other related Human Resource certifications will be considered an asset.

  • Experience giving small-group presentations.

  • Experience in using integrated human resource computer systems and software programs such as spreadsheets and databases.

  • Strong communication, interpersonal, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent attention to detail, effective time management skills and sound organizational skills.

  • Initiative, autonomy, excellent judgment; self-starting and self-motivated; flexibility and adaptability.

  • Ability to organize while multitasking with strict legislated deadlines.

  • Tact, diplomacy, respect for confidentiality and ability to maintain proactive and effective service orientation and awareness of and sensitivity to diversity.

  • Bilingualism – French and English (spoken and written).
