Are you an established Real Estate Paralegal looking for a new challenge? We are looking for an experienced paralegal to join our dynamic Downstream Canada legal team. In this role, you will provide legal support and commercial input on a broad range of matters relating to our asset management team in Canada.

You will support new leases, purchase and sale agreements, lease renewal activities, registrations and all related transaction documents in connection with Suncor's retail (including Petro-Canada) operations.


Minimum Requirements: 

  • Graduated with a legal assistant diploma at an accredited school

  • 3-5 years of experience as Paralegal or Law Clerk in a similar position

  • Drafting and legal research skills

  • Excellent organization skills, management of priorities and deadlines

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills and ability to work well both independently and collaboratively in a team environment

  • A high degree of flexibility and ability to readily adapt to changes in Suncor's business priorities and plans

  • The ability to manage a diverse workload in a fast-paced and dynamic environment

  • Must be highly skilled in Microsoft Word

  • Ability to communicate in a professional manner with lawyers, clients and other team members

  • Ability to work within tight timelines and meet deadlines


Responsibilities: 

  • Prepare and review legal documents pertaining to commercial real estate transactions for Canadian provinces, including purchase and sale agreements, transfers of land, statements of adjustment, leases, lease extension and amending agreements, lease renewal agreements, easements, rights-of-way, releases, postponements, and non-disturbance agreements

  • Communicate with external stakeholders, including registries, government agencies and third-party legal advisors

  • Assist with standardizing legal template documents and processes

  • Provide guidance to Suncor's asset management and retail sales and site operations business teams on legal templates

  • Conduct due diligence by obtaining and reviewing Personal Property, Municipal, Corporate, Land Registry and Teraview (Ontario) searches

  • Prepare and register notices with land titles offices (leases, amendments, mortgages, agreements, environmental regulatory notices)

  • Complete a purchase and/or sale of a commercial property and provide final report to the business team

  • Administrative tasks including preparing letters and memos, receiving and disbursing funds, diarizing for critical dates, meeting with clients to attend to execution of documents, reviewing and finalizing documents prepared or amended by Suncor’s business teams

  • Support internal legal counsel on other commercial real estate related tasks

Location and other Key Details

  • This is a temporary position for a period of 24+ months

  • This is an office-based role; you will work out of our Calgary head office, located in the Suncor Energy Centre at 150 –6th Ave S.W. 

  • Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday

  • Our business professional roles follow internal compensation guidelines and the pay band will generally be based years of experience and scope of work
