Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and forward-thinking Lead, Systems Administrator to join our dynamic Technology team at McKesson. In this role, you will be responsible for implementing and optimizing virtual server infrastructure environment and driving innovative solutions that enhance the performance, scalability, and reliability of our mission-critical virtual infrastructure.

Specific Responsibilities

Certain responsibilities associated with this role are included in Section B.  Specific duties include, but are not limited to the following:

• Implement and manage a robust VMware vSphere environment, including ESXi hosts, vCenter, and associated VMware technologies.

• Analyze business requirements and translate them into efficient, scalable virtual server infrastructure designs.

• Proactively identify opportunities to optimize resource utilization, improve redundancy, and enhance security within the VMware environment

• Develop and implement automated solutions for virtualization and cloud infrastructure using tools such as VMware vSphere, Ansible, and PowerShell.

• Provide guidance to colleagues and other teams regarding McKesson systems and platforms, sharing technical expertise and best practices.

• Collaborate cross-functionally with IT teams, application owners, and business stakeholders to ensure virtual infrastructure aligns with evolving organizational needs

• Research industry trends and evaluate new VMware features/functionalities to recommend strategic enhancements

• Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation and knowledge-sharing to support long-term infrastructure sustainability

• Collaborate with vendors and external partners when necessary to evaluate and select third-party solutions that align with project requirements and organizational standards.

• In collaboration with other teams, evaluate the performance of deployed solutions, identify areas for optimization and implementing necessary changes or updates.

• Provide technical guidance and support during project planning and execution, ensuring adherence to timelines, budgets, and quality standards.

• Resolve complex technical issues, identify root causes, and implement effective remediation strategies

• Provide Level 4 support to MSP and respond to after-hours support requests as needed.

General Responsibilities

• Conduct research and stay up to date with the latest industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices to propose innovative solutions that enhance customer experience and improve internal processes.

• Ensure that internal and external requirements are met in a timely and cost-effective manner; solicit feedback from other teams to identify opportunities and to improve services; resolve minor conflicts and involve team members in problem resolution.

• Apply decision-making authority and autonomy needed to deliver accountabilities of job/role; seek approval from others on matters outside of job/role scope; when required, make decisions regarding the work and development of project team members.

Position Requirements

Knowledge:

• 10+ years of hands-on experience designing, implementing, and managing enterprise-scale virtual server infrastructure using VMware vSphere

• Deep technical expertise in VMware administration, including vCenter, ESXi, vMotion, DRS, HA, and other core features

• Strong understanding of virtual networking concepts, storage architectures, and high-availability configurations

• Proven ability to automate virtual infrastructure management using PowerShell, vRealize, Ansible, or other tools

• Highly motivated and can operate independently

• Experience integrating VMware environments with cloud platforms (e.g., Azure, AWS, Google Cloud)

• Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze complex issues, propose solutions, and provide guidance to support groups and users

• Strong communication, interpersonal and critical thinking skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, stakeholders, and external partners

• Ability to propose and implement innovative solutions, considering customer demands and internal process improvements

• Knowledge of industry best practices, emerging technologies, and trends in infrastructure solutions.

• Strong documentation and reporting skills.

Ability to:

• Take ownership of complex situations and work within a team environment to resolve issues effectively.

• Quickly understand complex problems and develop solutions to resolve issues expediently.

• Think out of the box regarding business architecture, analysis, and planning.
