We're reimagining the way Australians live, work, and play. We own and manage some of the most recognisable and loved retail destinations across Australia.

We’re evolving our portfolio into destinations that offer a broad selection of retail, residential, and office spaces. Through our diverse portfolio, data-led decision-making, and nationwide development pipeline, we do things differently.

We are Vicinity.

Role purpose

Join Vicinity Centres — Where Technology Shapes Real World Experiences

At Vicinity, we’re not just building software — we’re shaping the future of connected retail and destinations across Australia. From IoT enabled environments to data driven customer experiences, our engineering team powers the platforms that keep our centres smart, efficient, and future ready.

We’re looking for an Software Engineer who’s passionate about building reliable, scalable backend systems and thrives in an environment where curiosity, ownership, and continuous improvement are part of the everyday rhythm. If you love solving real problems with elegant engineering, this is a place where your work will have tangible, visible impact.

Why You’ll Love This Role

As an Application Engineer at Vicinity, you will design, build, and operate the backend application services that connect our systems, devices, and data at scale. You’ll work across microservices, APIs, cloud services, and IoT platforms — blending engineering craft with real world operational understanding.

You’ll have autonomy, trust, and the opportunity to work closely with talented engineers, product teams and platform specialists. You’ll also play a part in uplifting others, supporting a collaborative culture where knowledge sharing and growth are valued.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Designing, developing and maintaining microservices, APIs and backend systems for internal and customer facing applications

  • Applying strong API design principles — consistency, versioning, documentation and usability

  • Building and maintaining integrations using REST APIs, messaging and event driven architectures

  • Working with IoT platforms, device telemetry and Azure IoT Hub across AWS and Azure environments

  • Designing and maintaining relational and NoSQL data models (SQL, MongoDB)

  • Improving performance, reliability, scalability and security across systems

  • Supporting production stability through troubleshooting, monitoring and observability

  • Writing clean, testable, maintainable code that reflects engineering best practice

  • Owning well defined pieces of work end to end, seeking input where helpful

  • Sharing knowledge via code reviews, technical discussions and informal mentoring

  • Contributing to engineering standards, practices and ways of working

What You’ll Bring

Essential Experience

  • 2+ years in backend or software engineering

  • Strong hands on skills with Python and/or C#

  • Experience building microservices and APIs

  • Solid understanding of API concepts: RESTful patterns, versioning, error handling, security

  • Strong SQL skills and relational data modelling experience (MySQL, PostgreSQL)

  • Exposure to NoSQL databases (e.g. MongoDB)

  • Experience with AWS or Azure, ideally with Azure IoT Hub

  • Familiarity with IoT concepts, event streaming or telemetry integrations

  • Experience in Agile teams using CI/CD, Git and modern tooling

  • Comfortable working in Linux environments and using command line tools

What We Value

  • Independent thinkers who collaborate well

  • Strong problem solving skills and a pragmatic engineering mindset

  • A focus on reliability and real world operability

  • Curiosity, eagerness to learn and a growth mindset

  • Clear communication and teamwork

  • An ownership mindset, including supporting services in production

Nice to Have (Not Essential)

  • Experience with Azure IoT Hub at scale

  • Docker, Kubernetes or other containerisation tools

  • Knowledge of DevSecOps practices and security standards (e.g. OWASP)

  • Integrating with third party APIs or data platforms like Databricks or Redis

  • Familiarity with Google Cloud

  • Contribution to CI/CD pipeline enhancements

Qualifications

Tertiary qualification in Computer Science, Information Technology or equivalent hands on experience.

Be Part of Something Bigger

At Vicinity, you’ll join a team that invests in your development, values your perspective and empowers you to make an impact. If you’re excited by the idea of working on modern platforms connected to real physical environments — and you love building systems that genuinely matter — we’d love to hear from you.
