Job Description Summary:

The Senior Intellectual Property Associate is responsible for overseeing patent management activities and is the primary contact for KU and KUMC faculty inventors and outside patent counsel for intellectual property protection and patent prosecution matters. The Senior Intellectual Property Associate may from time-to-time oversee the work of student interns, administrative staff, or external consultants.

Job Description:

Key Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Develops internal processes and procedures for patent database management, docketing, patent filing and maintenance. 

  • Researches, compiles, organizes, and presents information regarding patent portfolio to licensing team.

  • Manages an annual patent budget and approves expenditures for legal services.

  • Coordinates recurring RFP process for external patent counsel in collaboration with KU Procurement and Office of the General Counsel.

  • Advises licensing staff on patent matters.

  • Ensures timely filing of patent applications, office action responses, and payment of fees.

  • Ensures compliance with federal regulations regarding intellectual property.

  • Remains current on changes to patent law.

  • Educates faculty inventors and fellow KUCTC staff on intellectual property matters and relevant changes to patent law.

  • Collaborates with college and departments to support a culture of innovation across KU’s campuses.

  • Serves as a team lead and mentor for lower-level intellectual property associates.

Work Environment

Work is normally performed in a typical interior work environment which does not usually subject the employee to any unpleasant elements.

Required Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree in life sciences, physical science, engineering, or related field. Education may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis. Experience used to substitute education is in addition to any required work experience.          

Work Experience: Minimum five (5) years’ experience with relevant technology transfer or patent law experience

Preferred Qualifications

Education: Advanced degree (MS, JD or equivalent) preferred.

Work Experience: Prior experience in university technology transfer
Registration with the United States Patent & Trademark Office

Compensation Statement:

The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
