Senior Counsel, Group Benefits Litigation, The Hartford

The Senior Counsel, Group Benefits Litigation, will be part of the Law Department’s Corporate Litigation Group responsible for managing litigation brought against Hartford’s Group Benefits business. The Senior Counsel, Group Benefits Litigation, will report to the Managing Assistant General Counsel, Corporate Litigation.

This role can have a Hybrid or Remote work arrangement.  Candidates who live near our Hartford, CT office location will have the expectation of working in an office 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).   Candidates who do not live near an office will have a remote work arrangement, with the expectation of coming into an office as business needs arise. 

Responsibilities

  • Manage litigation and regulatory inquiries arising out of Hartford’s Group Benefits business, including ERISA governed claims, non-ERISA claims, and class action matters
  • Counsel line of business clients on a wide range of legal matters
  • Develop and execute on litigation strategy
  • Retain and manage outside counsel and other litigation vendors
  • Partner with outside counsel in day-to-day case management and strategic decision-making
  • Actively participate in review/revision of briefs, discovery responses/objections, and other litigation-related documents
  • Judiciously manage costs associated with outside counsel and other litigation activities
  • Serve as liaison between outside counsel and in-house clients
  • Counsel and provide training to business clients on a wide range of legal matters
  • Participate in the development and implementation of settlement and mediation strategy; attend mediations as required and assume an active role at mediations with proper client settlement authority
  • Work with business lawyers to provide risk management counseling
     

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of five+ years of litigation practice experience.  Significant experience with commercial litigation, Group Benefits and/or ERISA litigation preferred
  • Juris doctorate (J.D.) required; CT Bar license preferred, or must qualify as authorized house counsel in compliance with Connecticut’s rules
  • Demonstrated:

    • Entrepreneurial mindset; effective decision-making skills
    • Excellent legal judgment and discretion 
  • Regulatory experience preferred
  • Able and willing to travel as required, up to ~10% of the time

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$142,480 - $213,720
