About the role

As a Senior Human Factors & Usability Engineer, you will lead usability activities for medically regulated products within Dyson’s New Product Development (NPD) organisation. You will apply Human Factors Engineering (HFE) methodologies aligned to IEC 62366, FDA HF Guidance, and relevant medical standards such as IEC 60601, ensuring safe, effective, and user‑focused product experiences.

You will play a key role and partner with cross‑functional teams to build Dyson’s HF capability, drive key usability deliverables, and ensure compliance across the full product development lifecycle.

  • Develop expertise in qualitative and quantitative research, demonstrated through successful project execution, sharing knowledge, and peer mentoring

  • Apply Human Factors and Usability Engineering processes, aligned to IEC 62366, FDA, and applicable regulatory requirements, across new product categories.

  • Lead and collaborate with cross-functional teams—engineering, quality, commercial, design managers—to develop user specifications, Use FMEAs, Design Validation Plans, and product requirements.

  • Develop core usability documentation, including:

    • Use Specification

    • Task Analyses & Critical Task Identification

    • Use‑related Risk Analysis (Use‑FMEA/URRA)

    • Design Validation & Usability Test Plans

  • Plan, design, and conduct formative and summative usability studies, working with internal teams and external research agencies, including

    • managing participants recruitment

    • generating industry standard study protocols

    • moderating the studies.

  • Establish robust data collection, analysis methods, and evidence traceability for audits and submissions.

  • Communicate insights and clear recommendations to reduce use‑related risks and inform design decisions.

  • Maintain HFE documentation and ensure readiness for internal and external regulatory audits.

  • Mentor colleagues and support the development of Human Factors capability within Dyson.

About you

As a subject matter expert in Human Factors & Usability Engineering at Dyson, you will cover a specific scope in multiple projects. To realise our ambitions for this role, it will be advantageous to have experience in one or more of the following skillsets:

  • Proven experience in Human Factors & Usability Engineering for regulated or medical device products.

  • Strong working knowledge of IEC 62366, FDA HF Guidance, and familiarity with IEC 60601.

  • Hands‑on experience planning, moderating, and analysing formative usability studies; experience with summative validation is highly valued.

  • Knowledgeable about of HF methods, anthropometrics, ergonomics, cognitive psychology, user behaviour, and risk management.

  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to utilise advanced analytical tools and data modelling, to translate data into actionable design recommendations.

  • Clear communicator with strong presentation and stakeholder engagement skills.

  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills; able to present and moderate effectively.

  • Understanding of core product development processes.

  • Degree (Bachelor’s, Master’s, or higher) in Human Factors Engineering, Ergonomics, Cognitive Psychology, HCI, Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
