The Occupational Therapist Assistant treats patients under the direction of a licensed Occupational Therapist and according to the established treatment plan, manages patient care while utilizing support personnel as needed, documents treatment sessions in the Electronic Health Record, participates in team initiatives, and accepts responsibility for personal and professional growth. This position must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and service appropriate to all patient types in their designated area.
Experience Required
Acute Care preferred.
Education
Occupational Therapist Assistant Associate Degree
Training/License Requirements
Current BLS for the Healthcare Provider Certification (or completed within 60 days of hire).
Current licensure as a Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant in the State of Michigan.
Clinical Treatment
- Following appropriate goals and treatment plans as set out by the evaluating therapist.
- Chooses appropriate and up to date treatment methodologies and tools relevant to diagnosis and reason for referral.
- Demonstrates knowledge of, and effective use of, appropriate therapeutic techniques throughout the course of treatment.
- Performs appropriate treatments with interdisciplinary rehab team based on thorough medical chart review; including physical therapy and speech pathology, in order to provide comprehensive treatment for acute care and placement needs.
Patient Management
- Shares responsibility over the course of therapy for patient management related to functional progress, safety and treatment outcomes as evidenced by team feedback and documentation.
- Assists in addressing discharge planning needs as evidenced by team feedback and documentation.
- Adapts the therapy treatment program as needed to respond to changes in the patient status and input from medical and rehab team.
- Provides efficient communication with all members of the patient’s medical team, care management, and nursing team in order to provide efficient and effective care based on ongoing changes in patient status and needs.
Documentation
- Documents clearly, concisely, and completely, including all essential elements according to department standards.
- Adheres to department standards regarding timeframe, form and content of written progress notes and discharge summaries. Including the IPPJ format for all assessments.
- Documents evidence of patient and family/caregiver education.
Rehab Team Participation
- Works as a resource in any area of specialty, assisting with complex patients and planning for, and adjusting treatment interventions as needed.
- Assists in developing educational and training resources for the rehab department associated with any continued education or areas of special skill.
- Maintains efficient use of work time to be as productive as possible.
- Completes routine administrative responsibilities within established timeframe consistently (e.g. time cards, PTO requests, etc.).
- Participates in committees, focus groups etc., department processes and special projects in accordance with clinical expertise and individual performance plan.
- Demonstrates fiscal responsibility in the department with respect to patient charges, equipment use, and supplies.
Weekend Staffing Specific
- Performs all tasks consistent with Essential Functions 1-4.
- Will determine patient appropriateness and readiness for therapy interventions based on thorough chart review and communication with nursing staff.
- Performs all levels of patient care management with the rehab and medical interdisciplinary team, including all written and verbal communication.
- Receives primary communication from the Leadership Team via phone or email, for all department updates, changes and staffing needs.
- Acts as the primary contact representing the rehab department for all patient care related questions and inquiries.
