Your New Role…
We’re looking for a Counsel or Senior Counsel who is passionate about television and streaming. Consideration may be given to someone who wishes to work 80% of a full-time week.
The Counsel/Senior Counsel, Legal, ANZ will be responsible for all legal aspects of our business across our free-to-air, pay and streaming television platforms in Australia and New Zealand with a heavy focus on acquiring content rights. Streaming is a core growth area for WBD, making it a dynamic and exciting environment to work in.
This position will form part of an ANZ team of five based in Auckland but working across ANZ and may cover other territories from time to time.
Your Role Accountabilities…
Negotiate commercial and legal terms relating to the acquisition of content from international distributors for WBD’s platforms and channels across Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific.
Advise on all legal aspects of local content production including development, funding, commissioning, talent deals, format licensing, legal clearances and compliance.
Advise and support local content teams in working with Australian and New Zealand industry bodies and government agencies.
Advise and support the business on legal and regulatory matters and changes across Australia and New Zealand.
Assist with lobbying government on proposed regulatory and legal changes.
Update contract templates and internal policies as required.
Work closely with regional and global legal teams to navigate legal restrictions, improve efficiencies and implement best practices.
Work on other commercial contract and legal matters to support the business from time to time.
Liaise with the Finance, Content, P&C and Commercial teams as appropriate.
Qualifications and Experience…
Technically proficient lawyer.
An excellent understanding of contract law and content rights essential.
Must be qualified to practise in Australia or New Zealand.
Training and experience at a top law firm or in-house team required. Experience in the television industry an advantage.
3-8 yrs PQE and excellent academics. (PQE is given as a guide only.)
Good business and legal judgment and a flexible and creative approach.
Ability to work autonomously and to own key internal commercial relationships.
Negotiation skills must be proven – to deliver both proper legal protection to the company and excellent commercial results.
Strong interpersonal skills – approachable and able to work effectively at all levels within the company.
Clear and concise communicator (both orally and written) – the ability to present and distil legally complex issues into legally compliant but practical and commercial solutions, in a way that engages stakeholders.
Well organised and attention to detail.
Professional: calm under pressure, clear thinking, well organised and grasps concepts quickly.
Has the maturity and foresight to keep the Legal Director informed on workload and escalating issues to them where risk is high in deals being worked on.
Ability to manage own time judiciously and deal effectively with competing interests.
Confident, sociable and able to interact with clients from different cultures and backgrounds.
