To that end, we manage the company’s relations with governments across the various jurisdictions where Sun Life operates. We also work to understand and provide strategic advice to our executive leadership and Board of Directors on the evolving global geopolitical and political risk environment that we operate in.

Sun Life is looking for an experienced international public policy and political risk professional to help us manage relations with our international stakeholders, conduct in-depth research on the political and geopolitical risks that we face and provide strategic advice on those risks and relationships to the company’s leadership.

The successful candidate will provide stakeholder outreach, research and writing support to the AVP, Global Government Affairs and Public Policy (Corporate and Global) on a broad range of international, geo-strategic and public policy issues that impact Sun Life’s global operations, with a particular focus on North America and Asia. The successful candidate will support international relations activities for Sun Life on a number of international and political risk policy files (including but not limited to international relations, trade and investment); build relationships and outreach strategies with key contacts across the Canadian and Asian foreign policy and business communities; and conduct research and analysis on political and geopolitical risk for Sun Life’s operations.

What you'll be doing

  • Work directly with the AVP, SVP and the broader GGAPP team as well as other senior Sun Life representatives to manage Sun Life’s international relationships with governments, industry associations and other stakeholders to ensure Sun Life is maximizing benefits.

  • Work with the team to conduct political risk analysis of the key markets for Sun Life’s operations.

  • Conduct geopolitical risk analysis of major trends and developments in world politics with the potential to impact Sun Life’s operations.

  • Support research on political and regulatory developments that may impact the business environment and Sun Life’s operations in Asia and other regions.

  • Conduct research that will assist in the development of Sun Life's public policy positions on global and international issues of relevance to our operations.

  • Draft key messages, background briefs and presentations for senior Sun Life representatives for advocacy purposes with government representatives, industry forums and other stakeholders.

  • Make recommendations on industry sponsorships and manage relationships with various industry/stakeholder groups, including meeting with industry associations and government representatives at various roundtable discussions and events.

  • As necessary, assist the Global Government Affairs and Public Policy team on other related projects.

What you'll need to succeed

  • Strong research and analytical skills.

  • Demonstrated stakeholder management skills.

  • Ability to coordinate and organize internal stakeholders.

  • Ability to learn complex issues quickly and to simplify them for public consumption.

  • Knowledge of the foreign policy community and deep understanding of international relations.

  • Knowledge/experience working on political risk or country risk.

  • Experience working in Asia and/or expertise in the political/social realities of one or more Asian countries considered a strong asset.

  • Experience working on financial sector-related policy files considered an asset.

  • Undergraduate degree in political science, international affairs or equivalent (Masters degree in public policy/administration or equivalent considered an asset).

  • Minimum of 5 years experience in a political risk or international affairs advisory role with a Canadian firm or business association or within government.

What's in it for you
