What You’ll get to Do:

The Future Positioning Navigation Timing Systems (FPNTS) team at Northrop Grumman Mission Systems (NGMS) is looking for an MBSE Systems Engineer to join our team.  This candidate will provide technical support of our navigation research and development (R&D) portfolio for military applications and is based out of Woodland Hills, CA. This job opportunity is contingent upon the arrival of a large Software Defined GPS Receiver program expected September 2024.  

In this role you will be collaborating with cross-functional engineering teams to establish architecture content and develop solutions that achieve customer intent.  It will require you to demonstrate good communication skills, systems thinking, and the ability to capture technical design in MBSE architecture products.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Development and evaluation of GPS receiver architectures and requirements
  • Defining key capabilities and performance requirements for GPS receivers
  • Decomposing functionality
  • Defining interfaces in a Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) environment 
  • Communication of status, issues, and results with program management and customers.
  • Work in close collaboration with Government R&D organizations such as DARPA, AFRL, ONR, and Army labs to develop advanced navigation and timing technologies.
  • Work with a team of navigation and timing experts in a team-based collaborative environment dedicated to advancing the state of the art
  • Work with leading-edge Software Defined Radio (SDR) systems for GPS, GNSS, and other cooperative signals along with advanced signal processing techniques to define new product lines
  • Work with leading-edge navigation warfare (NavWar) systems, techniques, algorithms, and software to enhance mission success in contested environments.

This requisition may be filled at either a Principal Level or a Sr. Principal Level. 

Basic Qualifications for a Principal MBSE Systems Engineer:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) discipline AND 5 years of related professional/military experience in MBSE or Systems Engineering OR a Master's degree in a STEM discipline with 3 years of related professional/military experience in MBSE or Systems Engineering OR a Ph.D in a STEM discipline with 0 years of related professional/military experience in MBSE or Systems Engineering
  • Experience in Cameo, Rhapsody, Simulink, SCADE, or other MBSE Modeling applications.
  • US Citizenship
  • Active DoD Secret clearance or higher clearance.
  • Ability to work on site a minimum of 4 days a week.

Basic Qualifications for a Sr. Principal MBSE Systems Engineer:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) discipline AND 9 years of related professional/military experience in MBSE or Systems Engineering OR a Master's degree in a STEM discipline with 7 years of related professional/military experience in MBSE or Systems Engineering OR a Ph.D in a STEM discipline with 4 years of related professional/military experience in MBSE or Systems Engineering
  • Experience in Cameo, Rhapsody, Simulink, SCADE, or other MBSE Modeling applications.
  • US Citizenship
  • Active DoD Secret clearance or higher clearance.
  • Ability to work on site a minimum of 4 days a week.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Exposure to requirements specification and interface control documents (ICD) for GPS-153/RS-232,etc.
  • Working knowledge of Power Management, Buffer/Memory Management, Precision timing interface.
  • Familiarity with signals of opportunity and alternate navigation signals.
  • Familiarity with open system architectures (ex: ASPN, CMOSS, PNTOS, JADC2).
  • Familiarity with anti-jam GPS processing techniques and analysis (such as nulling, STAP, SFAP, SFAP-T, differential GPS)
  • Familiarity with military GPS modernization particularly M-code signal processing and capabilities.
  • Familiarity with GPS satellite constellation simulator test equipment
  • Familiarity with inertial navigation systems (INS) mechanizations.
  • Familiarity with integrated INS/GPS navigation systems involving exposure to Kalman filtering / estimation theory
  • Familiar with UML, SysML, and/or AADL
  • Familiar with DoDAF/UPDM, SysML, or UAF
  • Experience developing MBSE artifacts such as behavior diagrams (activity, sequence, or state machine) and structure diagrams (block definition and internal block diagrams) in SysML
  • Experience with Systems Engineering activities, such as functional analysis, requirements development and decomposition, interface definition, or verification
  • Experience running CAMEO Simulation Tool Kit for SysML validation
  • Ability to analyze architectures and develop MBSE views in SysML
  • Experience with Magic Grid Framework
  • Experience with DOORs
  • Familiar with C/C++
  • Familiar with Software Design Patterns
  • Familiar with digital processing
  • Interfacing and presenting to customers

This position is contingent upon program award and clearance.

Salary Range: $107,300.00 - $160,900.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
