Data Engineer (ETL Specialist)

As a Data Engineer (ETL Specialist), you will deliver scalable, performant ETL processes in multi-tenant cloud infrastructures that produce measurably high quality data sets. The ideal candidate will have prior experience working with commercial and CMS medical claims data.
Responsibilities:
- Serve as a contributing member of a highly effective, self organizing, autonomous software development team, capable of completing all aspects of the sdlc, requirements through support and maintenance.
- Design and implement human and system readable enterprise data schemas, e.g. AWS Glue catalog and service registry.
- Analyze and Profile large, variant data sets to determine fitness-for-use.
- Clean, transform, enhance, and validate large, variant data sets.
- Design, implement, test, deploy, and operate ETL software components.
- Work with Subject Matter Experts and Product to elaborate need statements into actionable implementation plans.
- Identify opportunities and implement performance optimizations to achieve scalability and high performance/throughput.
- Facilitate data ingress processes with clients during onboarding.
Desired Skills and Experience:
- 5+ years of experience as a software engineer with a focus on ETL and data.
- Expert level skills in one or more programming languages; Python is a plus.
- Expert level skills in SQL including performance tuning, indexing, query plans, stored procedures, DDL.
- Expert level skills in at least one database technology, e.g. Postgres, AWS Athena, Redshift.
- Prior experience working in healthcare, particularly with member claims data.
- Experience with ETL frameworks/tools, e.g. AWS Glue, NiFi, SSIS, Informatica, Pentaho, Talend.
- Exposure to file formats, compression, and encryption; CSV, Parquet, Avro, JSON, EDI, Snappy, gzip, LZO, PGP.
- Experience with data modeling and design; primary keys, normalization, partitioning, and constraints.
- Experience designing for schema evolution and data migration.
- Experience with unit and integration testing with a focus on data quality, veracity.
- Hands on experience developing in the cloud including Infrastructure as Code, preferably in AWS.
- Exposure to Big Data technologies, e.g. Spark, Hudi, Presto, Airflow.
- Familiarity with Data Lake, Data Warehouse, Data LakeHouse, Data Mesh concepts.
Success Measures:
- In 3 months:
- Become oriented with Enlace’s software environments and tech stack.
- Begin working effectively within Enlace’s SDLC process.
- Make contributions to ETL code base.
In 6 months:
- Analyze and profile several client member claims data sets.
- Successfully catalog several enterprise data schemas.
- Build/enhance and deliver several data transformations between client specific and Enlace canonical schemas.
In 12 months:
- Produce demonstrably high quality data outputs.
- Optimize team’s delivery of ETL subsystem; improving the team’s performance beyond individual success.
- Automate support and maintenance of ETL subsystems using Telemetry.
- Provide technical and consultative support on complex technical matters to our clients and non-engineering staff.
- Act as a champion of best practices and data quality.
