Staff Process Engineer - Van Buren, AR

The Van Buren Staff Process Engineer position is responsible for providing technical expertise and capital project execution for Tate & Lyle’s specialty starch plant located in Van Buren, AR.  The engineer in this position will ensure the operation produces product that meets all quality, cost, and efficiency requirements. This position will design, develop, and implement continuous process improvements to meet goals established by the business/location, along with providing technical guidance to the plant operations teams to assist with process troubleshooting and developing corrective action plans.

 

This role is within the Productivity and Engineering Group and will have a strong dotted line to the Van Buren plant manager.

Main Accountabilities

  • Provide technical expertise and leadership for Tate & Lyle's specialty starch plant.
  • Will conduct and/or participate in engineering projects. Monitors day-to day production results. Translate process to flow sheet representation. Designs and specifies operation of plant processes. Obtains, organizes and interprets engineering data. Performs economic and technical analyses of projects.
  • Executes the development, design, installation, and startup of capital projects to improve safety, increase throughput, reduce costs, and improve quality.
  • Assists in preparing engineering proposals. Assists in developing findings, draws conclusions and makes recommendations. Prepares engineering reports and cost estimates. The demonstrated ability to develop findings, draw conclusions and make recommendations on one’s own is required for promotion to the next level.
  • Contributes to the design of the engineering projects including ideas for safer, less expensive or new techniques whether or not situation is related to a specific project.
  • Responsible for meeting engineering assignments within time and budget constraints.
  • Applies standard engineering theories, concepts and techniques. Applies a working knowledge of related disciplines.
  • Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve technical process issues. 
  • Ensure systems are in place to track key process parameters and overall process performance.  Conduct root cause analysis and use to provide improvement opportunities.
  • Provide technical safety expertise.
  • Works on a wide range of troubleshooting problems; uses basic knowledge of the process and creative thinking to solve problems and recommend corrective action. By the end of their tenure in this position, the engineer should have completed and started up a handful of successful process projects and ideally, the engineer will have assisted in at least one major project start-up.
  • Gains recognition from peers for gaining knowledge in engineering field. Develops and maintains working relationships with peers at the other plants.
  • Able to coordinate efforts of others. Continues to anticipate and resolve priority conflicts. Recognizes the priorities of the organization and begins to incorporate those values into prioritizing their own work.
  • Works with other process engineers, corporate engineers and production personnel. Displays ability to work with Maintenance, Accounting, Purchasing, Research, Suppliers and other support related groups and professional organizations.
  • Gain knowledge of the major cost drivers in an area and address these issues.
  • Works with integrity and upholds the values of the organization.
  • Reports to Technical Manager but may be under the working supervision of a Plant Manager or Production Manager.
  • Work receives moderate direction and supervision. Work plans are reviewed for accuracy, completeness and timeliness to deadlines.
  • Provides technical supervision and instructions to process operators. Assists entry-level professionals in procedural as well as technical matters.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is potentially exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions on site. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud. The position regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside conditions that include inclement weather, heat and humidity, and exposure to dust. In addition, this job also operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

Skills and Experience Required 

  • Bachelors of Science in Chemical Engineer or related engineering field
  • 4+ years of Engineering Experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Experience developing and managing capital projects
  • Experience providing production support
