Are you a motivated Bachelor of Engineering student? Are you looking for a thesis subject? We may have one just for you at Sandvik’s Underground Drilling production at Tampere! We have an open position for you to write a thesis on separately delivered part material management. Succeeding in this task will leave you with a finished thesis, us with a more efficient process, and our customers with a better experience.

Background and environment

Sandvik is a global, high-tech engineering group providing solutions that enhance productivity, profitability and sustainability for the manufacturing, mining and infrastructure industries. We are at the forefront of digitalization and focus on optimizing our customers’ processes. Our world-leading offering includes equipment, tools, services and digital solutions for machining, mining, rock excavation and rock processing. In 2023 the Group had approximately 41,000 employees and revenues of about 127 billion SEK in about 170 countries.

The thesis will be done for Sandvik’s Underground Drilling division’s production organization at Tampere. In our organization, we deliver advanced drill rigs for underground applications. The drill rigs are assembled from a large number of components and subassemblies manufactured by suppliers.

In our assembly process, there are something called separately delivered parts. They are not attached to the drill rig itself but are still delivered to the customer. They will follow the drill rig during the assembly process from one step to another. It is important to keep track of these separately delivered parts on their way from assembly to packing.

Your mission

In your thesis, we expect you to improve how we manage separately delivered parts. Your mission is twofold. First, you should map the current state we are in. For example, find out which kinds of separately delivered parts there are, in which ways they are currently delivered to the packing department, and how are they kept track of.

Second, you should propose how we could improve the process. For example, how to label the separately delivered parts, how to deliver them to the packing department from different locations, and how to track them in information systems.

The results should include the written report required for your degree and a presentation for Sandvik. We expect the thesis to be completed by the end of March 2025.

Your profile

We are looking for someone finishing up their Bachelor of Engineering studies in mechanical engineering, logistics engineering, or similar. You should have:

  • work experience from assembly manufacturing

  • a healthy amount of motivation

  • a pragmatic attitude

  • the ability to see the forest for the trees.

Why write your thesis for us?

A compensation will be paid for the thesis after completion and presentation. In addition to this, you will get the tools you need to succeed in your work. We will provide you with a workstation, a laptop, and other necessities. The thesis work will not be done in Sandvik’s employment, but as external work.

We will support you in your thesis work. You will join our Operational Excellence team, who will help you get started. Although the thesis is yours, guidance and steering will be available along the way, too.
