Job Title: Starting and Charging Systems Engineer

Salary: £38,850 + Dependent Upon Experience

Location: Peterborough, UK

Job Summary

The Starting and Charging (S&C) Systems are critical to the operation of our Machines and Engines. In this role, you will work with Customers, a Global Team and World Class suppliers, to define S&C requirements and implement robust solutions on our Machines and Engines. Each project offers the opportunity to work on the latest rotating electrics technologies, supporting the development of engines and machines designed to meet the latest emissions legislation, with world-class levels of quality and reliability. You will be part of a small, friendly and talented team, working together to deliver programmes that are critical to the long-term success of a respected, global company.

Additional Information

  • This role will require you to be on site 3 days per week in Peterborough

  • Limited global travel required

What You Will Do

This developmental position will provide the successful candidate will have an excellent opportunity to participate in and have significant responsibility for the end-to-end development of modern rotating electric components and starting/charging systems. This gives our employees true product ownership and the opportunity to see their products through from concept to volume production and field usage.

Typical project activities will include:

  • Liaising directly with clients and customers to understand and document component and system requirements for starting and charging.

  • Working with world class suppliers to identify, source and validate components to meet programme and application needs.

  • Conducting engineering analysis on components and systems to identify and address design risks through comprehensive verification and validation activities.

  • Conducting component and system design reviews to obtain ‘buy-in’ from the business to selected components, designs and suppliers.

  • Implementing validated components into production.

  • Monitoring S&C system and component quality levels against targets, identifying improvement opportunities and leading projects to address customer issues and implement improvements.

  • Supporting New Technology Introduction projects for Rotating Electrics Components and Starting/Charging Systems.

  • Regular reporting of project status and progress to both internal and external Stakeholders.

What You Have

Technical Excellence:

  • A good technical background from previous job roles or experiences. Top candidates will have a good technical degree in mechanical, electronic, electrical, control systems or automotive engineering and demonstratable knowledge of starter motor, alternator and S&C systems.

Analytical Thinking & Problem Solving:

  • A logical thinker with knowledge of the processes for robust component development and creation of comprehensive validation plans to mitigate component and system risks when integrating onto a modern engine platform. Top candidates will also have experience in component integration onto modern engines, machines and vehicles.      

  • Continuous Improvement: the desire to continually evolve and grow personal skills, implement process improvements and enhance products.

Project Management:   

  • The ability to plan, prioritise and organise, thus facilitating the successfully management and execution of a number of projects at one time.

Effective Communication:

  • Effective Communication skills: understanding of effective communication concepts, tools and techniques; ability to effectively transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through the application of appropriate communication behaviors.

  • Teamwork: Knowledge of the necessity and value of teamwork; the ability to work cooperatively towards shared goals and being supportive of others at all levels. Top candidates will have demonstratable knowledge and experience in coaching and mentoring of junior engineers.
