PRIMARY PURPOSE OF THE POSITION 

Partner with other fixed income investment professionals to improve our understanding of relevant credit documents and other complex legal issues to enhance investment outperformance.  Serve as an advisor for special situations throughout the firm, with subject matter expertise in covenants, in-court restructurings, and out-of-court liability management exercises.  Help defend against liability management exercises and covenant evolutions that impair creditor rights.  Also help negotiate and structure new financing transactions and other initiatives that benefit the firm.     

 

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Serve as the fixed income division’s dedicated legal resource for matters related to covenants, investment documentation and other matters impacting fixed income investments.  Directly contribute to investment decisions that improve returns and expected recoveries, and generate new opportunities.  
  • Analyze credit agreements and indentures of stressed and distressed issuers.        
  • Partner with the Distressed Analyst and other Credit Analysts as subject matter expert in high yield bond and leveraged loan covenants.    
  • Interact with management teams, external experts and other TRP investment professionals, including fixed income and equity analysts.    
  • Communicate insights and investment recommendations orally and in writing to various internal constituencies, including Analysts and Portfolio Managers.  
  • Manage workflow and critical processes for distressed investments, including outreach to other creditors, negotiating with counterparties and their advisors, and representing TRP on creditor committees and industry associations. 
  • Over time, learn to conduct fundamental credit research that results in independent buy, hold or sell recommendations that contribute to portfolio performance. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS 

Required 

  • J.D. degree and 2+ years of experience drafting, interpreting or enforcing covenants in credit agreements and indentures at a securities law firm, investment bank, asset manager, or any other capacity that applies covenant issues to fixed income investments.   
  • Critical attributes: solid analytical skills, effective verbal and written communication, and ability to distill complex subjects into easy-to-understand language.  TRP emphasizes a team-oriented approach, which requires analysts to demonstrate these attributes on an individual and group level.

  • Demonstrated interest in investing and capital markets. 
  • Ability to make judgments based on market knowledge. 
  • Inquisitive and analytical nature.  Flexible, responsive and self-starting personality with keen attention to detail. Open-minded and intellectually honest. 
  • Willingness to pursue new ideas and propose new investments, supporting one’s ideas to questioning by Portfolio Managers and other Analysts. 
  • Curiosity and flexibility to work with other Analysts and Portfolio Managers throughout the organization and in various asset classes, as opportunities and market conditions warrant. 

 

Preferred 

  • Certified Financial Analyst or Series 7 designation. 
  • Experience understanding and evaluating creditworthiness or prior investment training.

FINRA Requirements

FINRA licenses are not required and will not be supported for this role.

Work Flexibility

This role is eligible for remote work up to one day a week.
