Position Summary:

The Executive Director, Business Services for Vector & External Manufacturing Operations (VEXMO) will be a member of the VEXMO Leadership Team and will lead a dedicated team of experts to ensure delivery of the following key activities across the VEXMO team:

  • Project Management Office
  • Operational Excellence
  • External Manufacturing Business Systems
  • Compliance & Business Continuity Management
  • Digital Project Leadership
  • Culture and Engagement.
  • Chief of Staff support to Vice President, Vector Operations
  • Training and Learning

This role will lead a team that works across the multiple key internal and external nodes that form VEXMO operations, in particular: external manufacturing and testing for CD-19 and Multiple Myeloma vectors, internal vector manufacturing operations and external cell processing activities. In addition, this role will ensure definition and delivery of multiple VEXMO strategic initiatives and support the overall vector strategy build and execution. This role is essential for establishing and maintaining consistency within VEXMO, facilitating quick decision-making by eliminating obstacles and surfacing issues within the VEXMO team. Additionally, it involves collaborating with various functions within CTDO and GPS to promote consistency and share best practices related to common processes and objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensuring Delivery of Operational Excellence Activity
    • Lead and champion operational excellence (Lean, Six Sigma, change management) mindset and capability building across vector operations.
    • Create an overarching strategy and tools, practices & principles for change management
    • Lead the overall OpEx initiative portfolio management and execution; specific activities include opportunity identification, project prioritization, resource allocation, project oversight, reporting, & benefits tracking. This includes establishing and driving the vector COGm baseline and vector cost efficiency program, plus providing hands-on resources to execute operational excellence activities at applicable internal and external manufacturing sites.
    • Provides input and expertise to vector operations strategic initiatives including, but not limited to, Run the Business Optimization, QC Transform, Libertyville, Digital.
    • Coordination and communication of objective setting and KPIs
    • Partner with vector operations leaders to create a standard approach to lean manufacturing that includes objective setting, KPI reporting, tier governance and approaches to continuous improvement for clinical and commercial manufacturing

  • Ensuring Delivery of the Project Management Office Activity
    • Co-ordinates overall project portfolio including provision of oversight to vector strategic initiatives (level 1) & portfolio management and execution of all level 2 & 3 projects in vector operations. This includes coordinating resource management across the vector operations organization and with partner functions where appropriate, plus tracking portfolio status
    • Support the management of operational and capital expenditure for vector operations.

  • Ensure Delivery of Business Processes Activity
    • Manage external manufacturing facing systems including: transactions, POs, invoices, contracts in Oracle & SAP, plus Oracle Master Data and QuickBase vector tracking
    • Ensure continuous improvement and compliant usage of these systems with all stakeholders through management, mentoring and coaching
    • Connect with key stakeholders such as Quality, Patient Operations, Supply Chain and other groups’ BPOs to ensure consistency of process logic
    • Develop the strategy and business process road map for the Cell Therapy External manufacturing network business processes in a scalable way
    • Lead, develop & implement policies & procedures based on current regulations & industry standards to ensure readiness for the clinical to commercial transition.
    • Develops metrics to measure the effectiveness & robustness of business processes

  • Ensure delivery of Compliance & Business Continuity Management
    • Establish / enhance compliance related ways of working, tools and processes to ensure management of quality records by vector operations is compliant within the vector operations team and with key functional partners.
    • Ensure management of business continuity for vector operations in line with CTDO and enterprise needs, escalating issues / risks where appropriate and tracking status and improvement plans.

  • Deliver Digital Project Leadership
    • Ensure project leadership for key projects generated by the Digital Transformation Strategic Initiative, including but not limited to - SAP Wave 5, Fraunhofer GPTC5D systems set-up, Nikon Make 2 systems set-up, external & internal process and analytical data connectivity.

  • Drive VEXMO Culture and Engagement
    • Lead the development and execution of culture and engagement related activity for the VEXMO team

  • Provide Chief of Staff support to the Vice President, Vector Operations
    • ‘Right hand’ person to the department head in all matters associated with VEXMO run the business activity - meetings, tier, engagement, governance & Ad-hoc items.

  • CTDO Training and Learning
    • Ensure definition and delivery of CTDO training and learning activity, working with multiple stakeholders across CTDO and GPS.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Life Sciences or related field.
  • Minimum 12 years of experience leading cross functional Teams in cell therapy or biologics operations focused on project portfolio management
  • Strong direct people management experience
  • Demonstrated experience leading transformational change within a global network.
  • Deep experience managing a broad portfolio of projects of significant complexity and duration across a global network
  • Experience in developing talent, managing change, engaging and motivating people and developing organization and work structures.
  • Demonstrated expertise in Operational Excellence and Project/Program Management
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to multitask and work in a dynamic, fast paced environment.
  • Experienced in leading change and a demonstrated ability to accomplish results and meet deadlines and commitments.
  • Possesses strong collaboration, delegation and interpersonal communications skills and shares critical information with project team and senior leaders.
  • Demonstrated analytical and logic skills with a focus on fact-based decision making.
  • Hands-on operations experience at a manufacturing site
  • Comprehensive understanding of cell therapy manufacturing technology preferred
  • Strong financial acumen

The starting compensation for this job is a range from $245,000 USD - $325,000 USD, plus incentive cash and stock opportunities (based on eligibility).

The starting pay rate takes into account characteristics of the job, such as required skills and where the job is performed. Final, individual compensation will be decided based on demonstrated experience.
