RSM’s Financial Consulting (FC) practice is looking for skilled professionals to join us at the Supervisor level. RSM’s FC practice blends the best of both worlds by providing candidates with all the career growth opportunities that come with working for a public accounting firm, while at the same time operating in private company environments on a daily basis. We provide accounting, technology and consulting services to private, lower middle market clients, with revenues ranging from $0 to $100 million. In other words, we are the accounting department for our clients. Our diverse industry base includes technology, life science, not-for-profit, consumer products and professional service organizations, just to name a few.  

This specific position will start with supporting a large and dynamic NFP organization on a full-time basis, with an opportunity to shift into managing additional NFP clients in the future. This role will need to manage deadlines and a multitude of accounting and grant activities, such as grant proposal budgets, tracking, reporting, adherence to internal controls, month end close, year-end audit support, and the support of budget and forecasting activities. In addition, you will have the ability to learn and efficiently use our best-in-class cloud-based technology stack. FAO Senior Associates will have contact with our clients (CEO, COO, CFO, VP of Finance, Controller, etc.), as well as other client contacts including program and development teams.

  • Willingness to learn and work with emerging technology solutions such as OCR (Optical Character Recognition), AI (Artificial Intelligence) and Accounting BOTS
  • Professional presentation and great communication skills as contact with clients will be extensive
  • Solid Excel skills (create tables, use formulas, pivot tables)

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain an understanding of the accounting operations within the organization.
  • Obtain a working knowledge of accounting software packages.
  • Track grants and reporting requirements from foundations, institutions, and governmental entities.
  • Prepare grant financial reports and other required documentation for grantors/funders by the agreed upon deadline. Grants Manager must review and approve before submission to client.
  • Lead month-end close process related to grants.
  • Manage various general ledger account reconciliations.
  • Recommend and enforce internal controls, policies, and procedures established by the client.
  • Prepare the single audit schedules, SEFA, confirmation letters, etc.
  • Assist with responding to auditor inquiries.
  • Analyze and interpret financial information for client management and provide actionable insight and decision support.
  • Continuously identify opportunities to enhance the client’s monthly operations, make suggestions for process improvements.
  • Define and document repeatable methodologies with appropriate tools and templates that can be leveraged for future projects.
  • Understand our technology stack and identify additional add-on processes, systems, modules and integrations that can drive month end close efficiencies.
  • Perform client services as outlined in the RSM engagement letter and proposal submitted to the client.
  • Monitor the team, coach employees, and oversee the grants management process.
  • Ensure NICRA and indirect rate adjustments are booked monthly.
  • Manage federal grant reporting and oversee non-federal grants for other team members.

Qualifications 

  • 7+ years of diversified accounting and grant experience (for example, within an audit or outsourced accounting department, or internally at a nonprofit organization).
  • A minimum of a Bachelor's in accounting or finance is required
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills are a must (proactively communicates status, issues, conflicts, and priorities up, down and across the engagement team)
  • Ability to balance multiple responsibilities simultaneously plus excellent analytical and decision-making skills
  • Proficiency utilizing Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
  • Strong organizational skills along with the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to adapt to change effectively.
  • Experience with automated accounting systems (i.e. Intacct, NetSuite, Blackline, Bill.com, Tallie)
  • A service mentality to non-finance departments and a good understanding of nonprofit accounting standards, issues, internal controls, and processes.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively on client assignments.
  • Strong time management, organizational, attention to detail, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local grant regulation and account accounting standard is a plus.
  • Pursuing CPA or a CPA is preferred but not required.
