Job Description
An opportunity has arisen for a Development Engineer to join Ultra Maritime SMaP (UK) based in Staffordshire in our Development Capability team. This role would be ideal for an engineer looking to develop diverse aspects of their engineering knowledge.
Reporting to the Development Lead Engineer, the successful candidate will carry out vital roles within a dedicated team supporting the development and testing of electrical, electronic and electromechanical systems. The candidate will work closely with other project and team members undertaking systems development testing and engineering related tasks in support of projects, developing solutions to successfully meet project objectives
Key responsibilities
Undertaking systems development testing and engineering related tasks in support of projects. Including but not limited to:
Design and development of system test suits.
Conducting development and qualification testing.
Schematic and design capture.
Component selection, advice and review.
Undertake reasonable tasks as directed by the engineering and project functions.
Undertake engineering tasks as required by the project and the business in support of projects and programmes.
Undertake testing and laboratory testing of products.
Participate in internal and external meetings as required by the business.
Document appropriately the work and activities undertaken in line with local operating procedures.
Occasional attendance and support of on-site commissioning or trials activities. This may require overseas travel.
Skills & Knowledge
Application of skills and knowledge appropriate to the development of electronic/electrical/mechanical systems in support of the development and support of products, including but not limited to:
Skills and experience in the ‘live’ testing of low voltage (i.e. <1000V) electronic or electrical equipment.
A good understanding of the Health and Safety at Work Act (HASWA) and associated policies, working practices and safe operating procedures relevant to the working environment.
Skills and experience in the design of digital and analogue electronic circuits is desirable.
Knowledge of software methodologies and some experience in programming skills desirable.
Motivation and commitment to actively pursue learning and development. opportunities with a focus on developing and adapting skills through on-the-job experience.
Flexible attitude and hands on approach.
Adaptable and willing to perform a variety of tasks including electronic design and development, producing documentation/specifications, reports and presentations, testing, supporting equipment installation, design and assembly of test boxes/circuits, very occasional soldering and wiring.
Able to organise and support verification testing and qualification test programmes (e.g. EMC, shock, vibration, climatic, etc.).
Ability to make clear and concise presentations and reports to customers and other stakeholders.
Engineers should show a broad range of general engineering skills covering communication (Written and Verbal) through to systems engineering methodologies and understanding of safety and configuration control.
PC literate in Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel
Good organisational skills with the ability to prioritise and meet deadlines.
Good decision making skills, with the ability to identify and evaluate potential solutions and consider the impact of decisions before acting.
Ability to take initiative, taking ownership of tasks and looking for improvements.
Ability to embrace innovation and creativity and demonstrate attempts to develop new ideas and test new concepts.
Ability to adopt a flexible approach and adapt and respond positively to change.
Ability to articulate own viewpoint confidently to influence team members.
Ability to communicate effectively to others and convey ideas clearly and convincingly.
Qualifications
HNC/HND/BTEC or higher in electrical engineering or equivalent and suitable experience gained in previous Engineering role/s.
A Level Grades A-C or equivalent.
GCSE Grades A-C/9-4 Math’s & English or equivalent
Any additional requirements/particular aptitude/skill required:
Driving licence.
Travel to alternative locations in the UK and abroad to undertake occasional off-site activities is required.
Working overtime and unsociable hours as and when required.
Important Note: The successful candidate must be able to obtain relevant security vetting clearance required for the role.
