The Company

PayPal has been revolutionizing commerce globally for more than 25 years. Creating innovative experiences that make moving money, selling, and shopping simple, personalized, and secure, PayPal empowers consumers and businesses in approximately 200 markets to join and thrive in the global economy.

We operate a global, two-sided network at scale that connects hundreds of millions of merchants and consumers. We help merchants and consumers connect, transact, and complete payments, whether they are online or in person. PayPal is more than a connection to third-party payment networks. We provide proprietary payment solutions accepted by merchants that enable the completion of payments on our platform on behalf of our customers.

We offer our customers the flexibility to use their accounts to purchase and receive payments for goods and services, as well as the ability to transfer and withdraw funds. We enable consumers to exchange funds more safely with merchants using a variety of funding sources, which may include a bank account, a PayPal or Venmo account balance, PayPal and Venmo branded credit products, a credit card, a debit card, certain cryptocurrencies, or other stored value products such as gift cards, and eligible credit card rewards.  Our PayPal, Venmo, and Xoom products also make it safer and simpler for friends and family to transfer funds to each other. We offer merchants an end-to-end payments solution that provides authorization and settlement capabilities, as well as instant access to funds and payouts. We also help merchants connect with their customers, process exchanges and returns, and manage risk. We enable consumers to engage in cross-border shopping and merchants to extend their global reach while reducing the complexity and friction involved in enabling cross-border trade.

Our beliefs are the foundation for how we conduct business every day.  We live each day guided by our core values of Inclusion, Innovation, Collaboration, and Wellness. Together, our values ensure that we work together as one global team with our customers at the center of everything we do – and they push us to ensure we take care of ourselves, each other, and our communities.

Senior Software Engineer – Backend & DevOps

About the Role

You will be a key contributor to the Enterprise DevOps Platform, designing, building, and operating the cloud infrastructure, backend services, and CI/CD systems that power delivery across the organization. Working with strong autonomy, you will own non-functional requirements and DevOps practices for your components, drive architectural improvements, and uphold high standards of quality, reliability, and security at platform scale.

About the Team

You will join the Enterprise DevOps Platform team, responsible for end-to-end delivery of cloud infrastructure, backend services, and modern CI/CD tooling across the entire organization. We partner with product, operations, and vendor teams to deliver secure, resilient platform capabilities in a fast-paced, regulated environment. We value strong ownership, clear communication, and continuous learning.

Your Way to Impact

  • Design and implement scalable backend services and APIs that support critical platform and business capabilities.

  • Drive reliability and operational excellence by owning NFRs (availability, scalability, latency, security) across your components.

  • Improve CI/CD automation and developer productivity, reducing toil and accelerating delivery across the organization.

  • Mentor junior engineers, influence engineering practices, and contribute to architectural improvements across the platform.

  • Leverage AI-assisted development tools to accelerate delivery while maintaining high standards of quality and security.

Your Day to Day

Backend Development

  • Design and implement scalable, modular, and maintainable APIs and backend services.

  • Translate business and product requirements into clear technical designs and contribute to system design discussions.

Cloud & Infrastructure

  • Deploy and operate services on GCP, applying IAM best practices and monitoring cost and performance.

  • Manage containerized workloads on Kubernetes, including scaling, health checks, and rollout strategies.

  • Contribute to Infrastructure as Code using Terraform — maintaining modules and supporting environment provisioning.

DevOps & CI/CD

  • Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines using Harness, Jenkins, or equivalent tooling, implementing automated testing and deployment validation.

  • Support progressive delivery practices and improve build/deploy reliability and speed.

  • Ensure services are observable with appropriate metrics, logs, and alerts.

Reliability & Operations

  • Define monitoring, alerting, and dashboards for owned components.

  • Participate in on-call rotations, incident response, and postmortems.

  • Proactively reduce technical debt and operational toil through automation.

  • Leverage AI tools and agentic workflows (e.g., AI-powered incident triage, automated root cause analysis, self-healing pipelines) to enhance operational efficiency and system resilience.

  • Evaluate and adopt AI agents for tasks such as anomaly detection, alert correlation, and automated remediation to reduce manual intervention in production operations.

Engineering Excellence

  • Produce high-quality, well-tested code and actively participate in code reviews.

  • Mentor junior engineers and promote knowledge sharing across the team.

  • Use AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Copilot, Claude) effectively, reviewing generated code for correctness and security.

What Do You Need to Bring

Required Qualifications

  • 6+ years of software engineering experience.

  • Strong backend development skills in Java, Go, or a comparable language.

  • Solid understanding of distributed systems fundamentals.

  • Production experience with GCP, Kubernetes, Terraform, and CI/CD pipelines.

  • Strong debugging and troubleshooting skills for complex, production systems.

  • Experience with observability and code quality tooling including OpenTelemetry (OTel) Agents, Datadog, and SonarQube.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in fintech or other regulated industries.

  • Hands-on experience with Harness CI or Jenkins (preferred).

  • Experience improving CI/CD automation and developer productivity.

  • Exposure to ML-integrated systems and AI development tooling.

  • Demonstrated contributions to architectural improvements and technical design decisions.
