Job Summary:
As the Assistant Port Captain, you will assist the Senior Port Captain in ensuring the efficient operation of company vessels and customer facilities to verify that all operational requirements are met in accordance with Ledcor’s operating procedures. This role will provide active communication between seagoing and shoreside employees to ensure the Marine organization is operating in line with our safe work procedures and associated safety management system.
In consultation with the Sr. Port Captain, mariners, maintenance, HSE and the operations team, you will inspect vessels, review training needs, conduct training sessions, identify procedural gaps and implement corrective measures to uphold safety and operational standards.

Essential Responsibilities
Operational Monitoring (25%)
- Actively inspects and monitors operational condition of company vessels and customer depots/facilities utilized by company fleet.
- Performs problem solving and troubleshooting to address operational concerns. Conducts bi-annual tug and barge inspections to record the condition as a baseline for future inspections.
- Assist the Port Captain in overseeing vessel operations, including docking, loading, and unloading.
- Monitor and ensure compliance with maritime safety and environmental regulations.
- Coordinate with port authorities and other stakeholders for smooth operations.
- Guide crew activities, ensuring adherence to company policies and procedures.
- Coordinate logistics for vessel movements, including scheduling and routing.
- Perform inventory and supply chain for vessels, ensuring timely procurement and delivery of supplies.
- Assist in the preparation and execution of voyage plans.
- Assist in planning and scheduling maintenance and repair activities for vessels.
- Ensure timely inspection and certification of vessels and equipment.
- Coordinate with maintenance teams and external vendors for repairs and maintenance work.
Safety & Compliance (25%)
- Promotes, monitors, and audits the implementation and training of company DSM and standard operating procedures by actively visiting crew during voyages and at customer facilities to ensure compliance and readiness for external inspections and audits.
- Ensures vessels and crew are prepared for external inspections and audits
Liaison and Risk Management (20%)
- Serve as a liaison between crew and shoreside staff, and responsible for updating the Marine Operations Manual. Based on observations and feedback from mariners. A
- Advise the Sr. Port Captain on training needs and operational concerns and come up with recommendations and suggestions.
- Conduct and update risk assessments as required, and initiate Management of Change Process as needed.
- Assist with conducting incident investigations and manage corrective action follow up and closure related to vessel incidents and/or safety concerns.
Training & Certificate Management (20%)
- Oversight and management of vessel and crew certifications
- Maintains training administration for all mariners and is responsible for the onboarding and training of new deckhands
- Assists with managing the overall crew training program and mariner performance assessments
Operational Support (10%)
- Act a resource for the operations team, assisting with dispatch, administration, and crewing duties as required
- Organizes annual crew meetings to ensure ongoing communication and training
- Prepare and maintain accurate records and reports related to vessel operations
- Support the Port Captain in administrative tasks and other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Minimum 150GRT Certificate Of Competency
- Min of 4 years of Marine background with knowledge of relevant Transport Canada regulations
- 5+ Years of Knowledge of BC coastal waters including Fraser river
- 5+ Years of working independently, setting and accountable for deadlines
- 5+ years of work in an operational customer orientated environment
- Strong computer skills across a variety of planning and user software including MS Office and Excel
- Strong relationship development skills & ability to work effectively in a team atmosphere
- Ability to multi-task and adapt to constant change
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Proven problem solving, critical thinking and analytical skills
