Quality Technician/Straightener

Job Description Summary

The Manual Straightening Technician is responsible for manually straightening axle shafts by following specific work instructions and using mechanical tools. The role ensures axle shafts meet quality standards for runout, length, and overall conformance. This position plays a critical part in the manufacturing process by preparing parts for final packing and shipment.

Job Description

Set Up and Operation:

  • Place TIR/Length master for each part on the manual straightener.
  • Set up roller gauge following work instruction OF-04-W015 for accurate runout measurements.

  • Install stroke limitation blocks to prevent over-traveling of the ram during the straightening processs

Visual Inspection and Measurement:

  • Perform a detailed visual inspection of each part for non-conformances.
  • If uncertain, label it "Hold for Disposition" and notify the supervisor.
  • If not re-workable, label it "Scrap."
  • If the part is conforming, label the bin as "OK."
  • Measure part dimensions (length and runouts) against the control plan to ensure all specifications are met.
  • Disposition parts if the body bow exceeds 5mm, scrapping where necessary.

Manual Straightening:

  • Manually straighten parts by positioning them on the straightener, ensuring the high point of the runout faces upward.
  • Apply pressure using the straightening handle, adjusting as necessary while holding the part.

Re-Gauging and Quality Control:

  • Recheck runouts and part length to ensure compliance with print specifications.
  • If parts are still out of specification, repeat straightening procedures (maximum of four cycles per part).

Marking and Packing:

  • Paint-mark parts that pass quality checks as per specifications (inside pilot for runout and shaft length).
  • Pack conforming parts into clean, dry containers following customer-specific packing standards.

Required Skills and Education

  • High School Diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
  • 1-3 years of experience in quality preferred and/or 3-5 years in the manufacturing field.

Technical Skills:

  • Ability to read and interpret work instructions and control plans.
  • Experience using gauges, measurement tools, and straightening equipment.
  • Familiarity with identifying non-conforming parts.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks and manual labor, including holding and straightening parts.
  • Lifting and handle heavy parts as required.
