Position Summary

The Senior Medical Director, Health Equity will report to the VP and Chief Health Equity Officer of CVS Health. This business-oriented physician leader, with a keen expertise in quality improvement and clinical leadership, will work closely with the Chief Health Equity Officer and other CVS Health leaders to integrate health equity into CVS Health clinical protocols and workflows; lead implementation of enterprise clinician engagement around health equity best practices; and support design and implementation of health equity into programs, products, and services. The Senior Medical Director will also support successful engagement with internal colleagues, plan sponsors, clients, and other partners to elevate the company’s health equity strategy.

The incumbent for this role needs to work and thrive within a rapidly changing and growing business and make sound business decisions based on data and support positioning the organization for rapid and ongoing growth. They should be very comfortable and have experience leading in a setting of change and through influencing both within and external to their direct reporting structure. They should have extensive knowledge and experience working with Medicaid and Medicare, ideally within a health plan, as well as experience designing and implementing effective clinical programs.

You will make an impact by:

  • Responsible for leading and implementing efforts to integrate health equity into clinical protocols, workflows, and value-based care settings
  • Lead cross-enterprise teams in designing and implementing programs that decrease health disparities, with a keen focus on data, clinical evidence, and leveraging a quality improvement lens
  • Be primary point of contact working with product, quality, clinical and data teams to integrate a health equity lens into program and product design
  • Deliver presentations as a representative of the health equity team with clients, external partners, and CVS Health colleagues
  • Assure success and competitiveness of business units in responding to RFPs and RFIs as it relates to health equity   
  • Oversee large, complex projects and work with senior leaders to identify opportunities to implement solutions to business problems applying a strong health equity lens
  • Oversee development and implementation of the enterprise provider health equity strategy, focusing on improving provider network diversity, leading clinician training and engagement efforts, and integrating health equity into value based contracting
  • Be an integral part of the leadership team of the Chief Health Equity Office, including assuring a positive culture and supporting strategy development and implementation
  • Stay informed about industry trends, research findings, and evaluation methods.


Required Qualifications

  • Approximately 10+ years of experience working in a health plan or health care delivery setting leading population health or health equity strategies.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of health equity best practices and principles, ideally with experience integrating health equity into organizational structures
  • Expertise in Medicaid and Medicare policy, ideally with experience working within a health plan.
  • Demonstrated experience leading quality improvement projects from design to implementation, ideally in a healthcare setting.
  • Demonstrated experience working with provider networks to improve health outcomes, ideally working in a value-based care setting.  
  • Ability to connect and tie initiatives and concepts across multiple business functions and align to data and measurement goals.
  • Preference for, and ability to thrive in, a constantly changing and rapid-paced environment.
  • Keen ability to take initiative in proactively assessing problems and identifying potential solutions.
  • Demonstrated strong ability to successfully communicate technical concepts and implications to business partners.

  • Ability to travel up to 8 times a year, as necessary.

Required: MD or DO degree

Pay Range

The typical pay range for this role is:

$184,112.50 - $396,600.00


This pay range represents the base hourly rate or base annual full-time salary for all positions in the job grade within which this position falls.  The actual base salary offer will depend on a variety of factors including experience, education, geography and other relevant factors.  This position is eligible for a CVS Health bonus, commission or short-term incentive program in addition to the base pay range listed above.  This position also includes an award target in the company’s equity award program.
