Job Description:

Assistant Vice-President, Structuring, Defined Benefit Solutions

Sun Life’s Defined Benefit Solutions (DBS) business develops and implements innovative de-risking solutions for defined benefit pension plans. To support this growing business, Sun Life is seeking an Assistant Vice-President (AVP), Structuring for the DBS team.

The AVP, Structuring has ultimate responsibility for the pricing and structuring of DBS’ risk transfer products, for ensuring that our pricing framework continues to define best practice and for continually innovating our solutions to ensure that they meet our clients’ needs. In short, the AVP, Structuring is the chief architect behind DBS’ risk transfer transactions.

This role reports to the SVP & Head, DBS. It has two direct reports and 8 total reports.

What you'll be doing

Pricing and Structuring:

  • Own the pricing process for risk transfer solutions, such as annuity buy-outs, annuity buy-ins and longevity insurance.

  • Achieve or exceed our annual risk transfer sales target, while maximizing the overall profitability of the risk transfer business written.

  • Partner with the Longevity team to ensure that appropriate longevity assumptions are being used for each quotation.

  • Ally with the ALM team to ensure that optimal asset mix assumptions are being used for each quotation.

  • Orchestrate approvals from the Finance team and senior management by ensuring they have the information they need to feel comfortable with each quote.

  • Champion innovation and efficiency within the Structuring team and continually make improvements to our pricing process.

Business Development:

  • Support the Client Relationships team in educating plan sponsors and consultants on risk transfer solutions.

  • Strategize with the Client Relationships team to identify prospective clients and bring those clients to market.

Innovation:

  • Collaborate with the Client Relationships team and the Innovation team to identify and develop new risk transfer solutions.

  • Spearhead the incorporation of AI and other technologies into the Structuring team’s tools and practices.

Leadership: 

  • Provide direction and highlight priorities for the Structuring team to align with the broader business objectives. 

  • Build and develop a high performing team.

What you'll need to succeed

  • FCIA designation

  • 8 or more years of actuarial experience

  • Strong technical, analytical and problem-solving skills that allow for deep actuarial analysis

  • Excellent communication skills (written, verbal, and presentation) with the ability to explain complex ideas to non-actuaries

  • Solid influencing skills

  • Proven ability to manage multiple competing priorities

  • Very strong people skills to manage relationships with DBS stakeholders and coordinate large cross-functional teams

  • Previous knowledge of pricing, transaction structuring, longevity assumption setting, ALM, group annuities and/or registered pension plans is an asset 

  • Highly motivated, proactive, conceptual thinker who can work independently or in a team, and take a leadership role in a wide variety of assignments

  • As this position is posted in several locations, we specify that bilingualism (French, English, both oral and written) is required for Quebec only as the position includes managing both French and English-speaking staff (Quebec and outside Quebec) and providing daily support to the team.

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted.  It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors.  In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance.  Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
