Job Description:

The Ophthalmic Technician Trainee assists in providing excellent quality patient care by performing multiple tasks in coordination with the patient eye examination under the supervision of a certified ophthalmic assistant/technician (trainer).

Essential Responsibilities

Responsibilities listed in this section are core to the position. Inability to perform these responsibilities, with or without accommodations, may result in disqualification from the position.

  • Complete the 12-week Training Program. This includes written exams, a week-to-week rotation to meet the criteria of our training program and formal skills evaluations.
  • Complete training related to computerized scheduling program and electronic medical record usage.
  • Perform a variety of tests to include visual acuity test, lensometry, pupil exam, topography, pachymetry, tonometry, basic refraction, and retinoscopy.
  • Perform a variety of specialized tests as directed by the Physician and supervised by a Trainer to include PAM, BAT, color vision tests, Amsler grid, stereopsis, and dry eye testing.
  • Clean and stocks exam rooms, laser rooms, and minor surgery room.
  • Perform basic maintenance on equipment.

General Responsibilities

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

Education: High School Diploma or GED required.

Experience: No experience required.

License/Certification/Registration Requirements: None.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Required

  • Good reading and writing skills.
  • Good computer skills.
  • Good verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work in close contact with patients and co-workers in a caring, professional and competent manner.
  • Ability to learn and perform tasks accurately and efficiently.
  • Ability to handle a variety of tasks with strict supervision under moderately stressful situations.
  • Ability to cooperate in a team effort.
