This role supports the development and operations of Electromechanical Actuators for New Glenn, a single-configuration heavy-lift launch vehicle capable of routinely carrying people and payloads to Earth’s orbit and beyond. Engineered with a reusable first stage and a seven-meter payload fairing, New Glenn is building the road to space.

As part of a hardworking team of diverse engineers, you will work on the design, analysis, development, and qualification of the next generation of EMA’s for use on the New Glenn rocket.  EMA design scope will consist of design and selection of motors, bearings, gearboxes, ball/roller screws, thermal management, and structural elements.

Your scope will encompass the complete life cycle of the system from definition, interfaces, conceptual design, detailed design, component development, assembly, verification, qual testing, operation, manufacturing support, and post flight serviceability.  You will also be responsible to ensuring all cost and scheduling requirements are met.

You will work with suppliers and Blue Origin groups to identify and procure components.  You will size, select material, and analyze structural integrity under vibration, temperature, and mechanical loads.  You will work with suppliers and other support organizations to procure, fabricate, and install flight hardware. You will share in the team’s impact on all aspects of detailed mechanical design, requirements, layouts, analysis, component selection, modeling, drafting, manufacturing, and test definition.

To be successful in this position you will have proven skills in mechanical design, thermal analysis, structural analysis, material selection, manufacturing processes, engineering release, component/system development testing and vendor management.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or equivalent
  • 7+ year’s of proven experience in the design of mechanical systems
  • 4+ years’ experience designing EMA’s or their primary components (i.e. motors, screws, gearboxes, etc.) for high power, high load applications
  • Demonstrated understanding of thermal management approaches for EMA motors and power electronics
  • Experience in 3D CAD programs (Creo preferred)
  • Experience in Finite Element Analysis (FEA) tools to analyze actuator components (ANSYS preferred)
  • Proficiency in crafting engineering drawings with GD&T (ASME Y14.5)
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion
  • Solid understanding of fabrication, integration processes, and quality control techniques relevant to machined and electromechanical components
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.  

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or equivalent
  • Experience in aerospace industry
  • Experience in design of EMA’s for primary flight controls
  • Experience designing for and operating high voltage electrical power systems
  • Expertise in latest motor design and manufacturing technologies
  • Proven understanding of materials properties and treatments
  • Hands-on experience building and testing mechanical assemblies
  • Experience in engineering analysis/support for disposition of Non-Conformance (NC) related to machined parts and electro-mechanical assemblies


 

Compensation Range for:

WA applicants is $136,467.00-$191,053.80

Other site ranges may differ
