At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our diverse team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This role supports the development and operations of New Glenn, a single-configuration, heavy-lift orbital launch vehicle capable of routinely carrying people and payloads to low-Earth orbit, geostationary transfer orbit, cislunar, and beyond. Its first stage is fully reusable, and the vehicle was designed from the beginning to be human-capable.

As part of a hardworking team of diverse engineers, you will work on various spaceflight systems and share in the New Glenn Autonomy team’s impact on all aspects of requirements development, design, implementation, and verification of mechanical, thermal, fluid, and gaseous control systems. In this role, you will work closely with various stake holders in New Glenn subsystems and GNC teams to support the development of low and high fidelity plant models, perform analysis, and design efficient logic algorithms and state machines to manage and control various mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic actuators. You will be involved in conducting performance assessments including Monte Carlo analysis, develop unit tests for control application software, and take part in V&V activities such as HIL and subsystem test campaigns.

We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, and commitment to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight. Passion for our mission and vision is required!

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in engineering or related control systems field with 3+ years of experience
  • Experience developing control solutions for complex aerospace mechanical, thermal, hydraulic, fluid and gas systems
  • Experience with subsystem modeling, analysis and controls application development tools such as Matlab/Simulink (including autocoding)
  • Experience with classical and modern control design and analysis techniques; exposure to optimal control and estimation techniques (e.g. Kalman Filtering) is a plus
  • Experience with validation and verification approaches such as unit testing, system simulation, hardware-in-the-loop testing or integrated subsystem testing
  • Experience with Subversion or Git or similar revision control systems
  • Exposure to lean software development practices and techniques; including experience with tool automation and software development using Python and C/C++
  • Highly organized team player with excellent technical written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and strengthen our culture of inclusion
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum

Desired:

  • Advanced graduate degree in engineering or related control systems field with 6+ years of experience developing mission or safety-critical control system solutions
  • Experience developing real-time embedded control solutions (classical, modern, non-linear, optimal, etc.) for complex aerospace mechanical, fluid, thermal, and gas systems
  • Experience developing controls applications for hydraulic servo-valve systems and electrical motors
  • Experience modeling and analyzing control solutions with I/O transducers: displacement, rate, and acceleration sensors; pressure and temperature sensors; servo and solenoid actuators; etc.
  • Experience across the full product development lifecycle: concept definition, architecture, requirements capture and development, implementation, verification, system integration, qualification and release
  • Exposure to development of embedded control system solutions that comply with DO-160, DO-178 and DO-254 or similar guidelines
  • Familiarity with DOORs Next Generation (DNG) or similar requirements management systems; Atlassian JIRA or similar issue tracking systems
  • Passion for aerospace and the development of human spaceflight
