About Generate:Biomedicines

Generate:Biomedicines is a new kind of therapeutics company – existing at the intersection of machine learning, biological engineering, and medicine – pioneering Generative Biology™ to create breakthrough medicines where novel therapeutics are computationally generated, instead of being discovered. The Company has built a machine learning-powered biomedicines platform with the potential to generate new drugs across a wide range of biologic modalities. This platform represents a potentially fundamental shift in what is possible in the field of biotherapeutic development.

We pursue this audacious vision because we believe in the unique and revolutionary power of generative biology to radically transform the lives of billions, with an outsized opportunity for patients in need. We are seeking collaborative, relentless problem solvers that share our passion for impact to join us!

Generate:Biomedicines was founded in 2018 by Flagship Pioneering and has received over $700 million in funding, providing the resources to rapidly scale the organization. The Company has offices in Somerville and Andover, Massachusetts with 300+ employees.

The Role:

We are seeking a creative and motivated Scientist II specializing in computational structure determination and cryo-electron microscopy (cryoEM) methods development. In this role, you will develop new technologies to accelerate and enhance our structure-determination workflows using cryoEM. Your work will span computational design and experimental testing of "tool proteins" for cryoEM specimen preparation, as well as algorithm development for cryoEM reconstruction. Joining a dynamic interdisciplinary team, you will collaborate closely with our computational scientists and cryoEM experts to drive the production of high-resolution structural data at an industrial scale.

Here's how you will contribute:

  • Utilize in-house generative models of protein structure to design protein-based reagents that improve the speed and robustness of single-particle cryoEM structure determination.
  • Create and implement novel algorithms to solve complex protein structures, leveraging modern computer vision and high-performance computing techniques.
  • Collaborate closely with cryoEM scientists and protein machine learning scientists to develop and transition new methods into production.
  • Present your work in regular research meetings and prepare materials for broader internal and potentially external communication across disciplines.
  • Adopt and promote software development best practices while working effectively within a diverse team.

The Ideal Candidate will have:

  • Ph.D. in Biophysics, Biochemistry, or a related discipline, with publications describing novel methodologies for cryoEM and at least two years of experience solving relevant computational research problems.
  • Practical experience with structure determination by cryoEM
  • Experience working in a cryoEM laboratory environment, including vitrification and cryoEM imaging.
  • Proficiency in scientific software development using Python.
  • Deep understanding of computational methodologies for cryoEM.
  • Solid grasp of protein biophysics.
  • Excellent communication and presentation abilities.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic, innovative environment.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with recombinant protein production.
  • Experience with modern deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow.
  • Knowledge of high-performance computing environments.
  • Familiarity with protein modeling and structure prediction tools.
  • Demonstrated experience developing software in a team setting.
