The CIO for Technology team ensures that CommBank has a world-class engineering capability and is at the forefront of technology, using innovative and emerging technologies to help our customers and support our Group Strategy. Focused on innovation, best practices, and collaboration, the team seeks a Technical Product Owner to work with our global engineering community to use AI assisted tools and capabilities in ways that improve the engineering experience and enhancing productivity and engineering capability across the bank.

Through our partnerships with leading LLM and AI Developer Platforms, we’re providing our over 7000 engineers with world-class AI Powered Engineering tools and capabilities.

Do work that matters 

You will lead multiple Engineering Managers and technical teams to deliver on our mission: unlocking engineering capability and creativity through AI-assisted tools and intelligent workflows across the entire software delivery lifecycle. 

This role is about people leadership, strategic influence, and engineering enablement at scale — ensuring our engineers are empowered to use AI responsibly, effectively, and with measurable impact.  

Key Responsibilities: 

You area senior engineering leader who is passionate about people, agentic technologies, and growing the technology skills of the future. 

Leadership & Strategy 

  • Partner with the Executive Manager AI Powered Engineering and Distinguished Engineers as well as peer leaders across the Group’s Engineering Disciplines (including Security Engineering and SRE) to deliver one connected AI Powered Engineering strategy and roadmap.  

  • Contribute to shaping and executing the AIPE vision: embedding AI into engineering workflows to boost productivity, reduce tech debt, and accelerate innovation.  

  • Translate strategic intent into actionable squad-level priorities that drive adoption and measurable outcomes across thousands of engineers.  

  • Lead cultural change  - championing curiosity, continuous learning, and safe experimentation with AI.  

People Leadership 

  • Lead and grow a high-performing group of Engineering Managers and Engineers who are passionate about AI and the engineering experience  

  • Build an environment that fosters psychological safety, experimentation, and engineering excellence.  

  • Coach leaders to deliver through others, focusing on capability uplift, accountability, and shared purpose.  

  • Establish strong connections with domain leads, product owners, and architects to align engineering outcomes with business strategy. 

Enablement & Adoption 

  • Oversee the enablement of AI tools and workflows across engineering job families, ensuring consistent practices and standards.  

  • Drive the rollout and adoption of key AIPE initiatives  ensuring value realisation and alignment to the Group’s AI strategy.  

  • Champion measurable productivity uplift through AI — including reducing toil, improving developer experience, and enhancing software resilience.  

  • Guide teams in responsible use of AI tools, adhering to CBA’s data, compliance, and ethical frameworks.  

Collaboration & Influence 

  • Work closely with adjacent teams to ensure alignment on architecture, governance, and tooling.  

  • Engage with engineering communities through AIPE Champion Townhalls, forums, and enablement sessions, driving shared understanding and best practices.  

Metrics, Measurement & Continuous Improvement 

  • Embed data-driven reporting — using AIPE metrics and dashboards — to track tool usage, performance, and engineering impact.  

  • Identify opportunities to streamline cost, improve developer velocity, and enhance engineering quality using AI-powered insights.

  • Have demonstrable software development experience. You are willing to learn and jump into the deep end of technical problems and dive into code   

  • Can demonstrate a thorough understanding of software design and software development lifecycle   

  • Are familiar with emerging tech and methodologies  and have proven curiosity and contributions to the evolving conversation on the impact of AI and GenAI on Engineering  

  • Are confident in defining requirements, architecting, and designing software and code review practices   

  • Can leverage both quantitative and qualitative analysis to drive great decisionmaking
