About Ramp

At Ramp, we’re rethinking how modern finance teams function in the age of AI. We believe AI isn’t just the next big wave. It’s the new foundation for how business gets done. We’re investing in that future — and in the people bold enough to build it.

Ramp is a financial operations platform designed to save companies time and money. Our all-in-one solution combines payments, corporate cards, vendor management, procurement, travel booking, and automated bookkeeping with built-in intelligence to maximize the impact of every dollar and hour spent. More than 50,000 businesses, from family-owned farms to e-commerce giants to space startups, have saved $10B and 27.5M hours with Ramp. Founded in 2019, Ramp powers the fastest-growing corporate card and bill payment platform in America, and enables over $100 billion in purchases each year.

Ramp’s investors include Lightspeed Venture Partners, Thrive Capital, Sands Capital, General Catalyst, Founders Fund, Khosla Ventures, Sequoia Capital, Greylock, Redpoint, and ICONIQ, as well as over 100 angel investors who were founders or executives of leading companies. The Ramp team comprises talented leaders from leading financial services and fintech companies—Stripe, Affirm, Goldman Sachs, American Express, Mastercard, Visa, Capital One—as well as technology companies such as Meta, Uber, Netflix, Twitter, Dropbox, and Instacart.

Ramp has been named to Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies list and LinkedIn’s Top U.S. Startups for more than 3 years, as well as the Forbes Cloud 100, CNBC Disruptor 50, and TIME Magazine’s 100 Most Influential Companies.

About the Role

The Risk team builds the systems that enable Ramp to move quickly without compromising trust, approving billions of dollars in spend while preventing fraud, abuse, and catastrophic failure. Risk Engineering sits at the intersection of financial correctness, real-time decisioning, and adversarial systems design. This team owns the logic that decides who gets access to capital, how limits change over time, and how we respond when behavior looks suspicious — all in milliseconds.

We’re looking for a backend engineer who is excited by ambiguity, motivated by real-world stakes, and obsessed with building systems that are both defensive and scalable. This is not a rules-only risk team — it’s a product-driven, data-heavy engineering org where every decision directly impacts customers, revenue, and Ramp’s financial health.

This is a chance to work on systems that actively protect the company and our customers, while still enabling Ramp to grow aggressively.

What You'll Do

  • Design and build core risk decisioning systems that operate in real time across card spend, bill pay, and emerging financial products.

  • Own services that assess fraud, credit risk, abuse patterns, and anomalous behavior — balancing false positives with business impact.

  • Partner closely with Risk, Finance, and Data Science to translate evolving risk policies into reliable, auditable software.

  • Build event-driven pipelines that ingest large volumes of transactional data and surface risk signals with low latency.

  • Enable AI-driven and statistical models to plug into production decision flows safely, with strong monitoring and rollback mechanisms.

  • Debug high-severity production issues where correctness matters more than speed — and mistakes have real dollar impact.

  • Help shape Ramp’s long-term risk architecture as we expand into new products, customer segments, and geographies.

What You Need

  • 2+ years of backend engineering experience, ideally in fintech, payments, risk, fraud, or other high-correctness domains.

  • Strong experience designing data-intensive, event-driven systems that operate at high volume and low latency.

  • Proficiency in Python (or a comparable backend language) and comfort working across distributed systems.

  • A systems mindset: you think in failure modes, edge cases, and adversarial scenarios.

  • Experience building or operating systems with strict auditability, observability, and correctness guarantees.

  • Ability to work closely with non-engineering partners (Risk, Finance, Ops) and turn nuanced policies into clean abstractions.

  • High ownership mentality — you care deeply about the systems you ship and how they behave in production.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with fraud detection, credit underwriting, or financial risk models.

  • Familiarity with real-time decisioning systems, streaming architectures, or rules engines.

  • Exposure to AI / ML systems in production, especially in risk-sensitive environments.

  • Prior experience supporting on-call rotations for mission-critical infrastructure.

  • Comfort operating in ambiguous environments where the “right” answer evolves over time.
