The position will be responsible for verifying Disney Cruise Line operates in compliance with all relevant maritime environmental regulations.
This includes incident investigations related to environmental compliance at Disney Cruise Line and Disney Signature Experiences, including the use of root cause analysis theory, investigative techniques, proposal of corrective actions, and advising on appropriate reporting and notification to authorities.
This position will represent the company with external authorities and organizations in maritime safety-related matters.
This includes providing advice to senior management for maritime environmental compliance and environmental-related regulatory affairs matters, including emerging regulations.
Manage the review of internal policy changes to our Safety Management System to verify consistency and compliance with MARPOL and all appropriate governing standards.
This position reports to Senior Manager – Environmental Operations.
Support shipboard Environmental Officers and Island Environmental Managers and shore side personnel for compliance with applicable laws, regulations and company procedures.
Ensures DCL vessels have the necessary information and guidance to meet the requirements of international (e.g., MARPOL); national (Port State and Flag State); regional/local (e.g., ECAs, special areas, ports, etc.) and internal SMS policies.
Represent DCL as required with Cruise Line International Association (CLIA), BMA, U.S. Coast Guard, CARB, ADEC and other maritime regulatory organizations.
Manage feedback and corrective actions for internal and external environmental reports including Accidents, Incidents, Compliance and Suggestions to continuously monitor compliance of our fleet with applicable laws, regulations, and company environmental policy.
Conducts vessel assessments across the fleet verifying compliance with all applicable environmental regulations and company policies
Support newbuilding and Dry Dock projects and start-up operations by providing expertise in environmental related matters as well as coordination with authorities on compliance issues.
Ensures that all of Disney Cruise Line® environmental policies and Location Operating Guidelines (LOGs), are being followed. Initiates follow-up and corrective actions and develops new or existing policy if required.
Monitor equipment for technical, public health (USPH) requirements and compliance.
Provides support as required to Marine Technical, or DCL support infrastructure (ashore and afloat) to maintain effective environmental processes across the organization.
Participate/advise in environmental system innovations and technology advancements to identify potential risks of non-compliance.
Review all new and amended rules and regulations which may impact the cruise industry.
Work with external partners to monitor emerging rules and share insights in a timely manner.
Act in Emergency Response (Situation Management) teams when required.
5+ years’ relevant experience.
Experience should include delivery of environmental reports and audits.
At ease interacting with all levels of regulatory bodies.
Requires strong interpersonal skills to communicate with all levels of management and supervise on and off ship as required.
Possess in-depth knowledge and experience of working with complex environmental management systems.
Strong understanding of international cruise ship regulatory requirements (SOLAS, MARPOL) and the role of Flag and Port States.
Familiar with IMO SEEMP, CII, EEXI, EEDI and marine sustainability technology.
Familiar with SMFF arrangements.
Be fully conversant with planned and unplanned maintenance of environmental systems and defect reporting systems.
Ability to conduct complex investigations with the ability to professionally communicate the findings orally and in writing.
Be able to employ appropriate interview techniques to gather evidence at all levels of shipboard employees.
Possess knowledge of the full range of operational environmental systems and technical equipment associated with a modern cruise vessel.
Familiar with emergency response and contingency operations.
Must have very strong communications skills; be a confident and capable public speaker and proficient in completing complex technical documents, or investigation reports for distribution to senior leadership and external audiences.
Requires Bachelor’s degree in marine, engineering or science related field.
