Background Information

The Product & Technology department at the Wikimedia Foundation is responsible for building and maintaining the user experience for Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects. 

The department is looking for a UX Copywriter with a strong understanding of user experience and technical background to work with Product Design and Product Management teams. You will be responsible for creating a content strategy with consistent and org-aligned guidelines for how we approach UX writing as relates to augmentation and AI/LLM/machine-learning across our product portfolio. 

Statement of Purpose

The Wikimedia Foundation is looking for an experienced UX Copywriter to work with Product Design and Product Management teams to elevate the standard of our UX copy and provide consistency to how we approach copywriting across our product portfolio. The focus will be on creating a content strategy and content guidelines for use of augmentation in Wikimedia products, to be completed within their 3 month contract.

Scope of Work

The UX Copywriter will work primarily on an augmentation content strategy and guidelines project, as defined by the project lead in the Product Design team. They will be required to meet with product management and design stakeholders during a content audit and discovery phase, and will share their progress and deliverables for feedback and review on a regular basis.

Responsibilities

  • Reducing UX complexity by creating clear, concise and compelling copy in order to help provide a delightful experience for our global user base. We are looking especially for someone with experience simplifying newer, and technically complex concepts in the AI/ML space.
  • Working closely with UX Designers and Product Managers to explore the effectiveness of a range of different copy ideas, through user testing and research.
  • Developing and shaping UX copywriting guidelines for our products which are easy for others to understand and apply to their day-to-day practice.
  • Considering accessibility standards and diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives in your work, to ensure we fulfill the needs of our global audience.
  • Applying new copy guidelines to existing user flows, paying attention to how the smallest details of word choice and tone, can influence the overarching narrative flow.
  • Providing copy in a simple language that can be easily understood by those with English as a second language, whilst also being suitable for translation and accompanied by instructions for translators to ensure a consistent experience across different languages.
  • Collaborating closely with designers, researchers, product managers, engineers and marketers to ensure their perspectives are included in your work.

  • Generates ideas for the future as well as think tactically about how to deliver work in the present.
  • Self-motivated and enjoys exploring how UX writing is evolving in the digital tech industry and applying these learnings to their work. 
  • 3+ years of experience as a UX writer contributing on design teams.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in related work experience.

Additionally, we’d love it if you have...

  • Experience working with translators to translate your copy.
  • Background in content consumption, publishing, education, or news
  • Have familiarity with Free Knowledge and/or Open Source communities
  • Speak more than one of the nearly 300 languages of the Wikimedia projects audiences

  1. Specific timelines for deliverables will be defined by the project lead at the start of the contract. It includes:

  3. Creation of an augmentation content strategy
  4. Creation of an associated copy playbook/guidelines
  5. Pilot application

Salaries at the Wikimedia Foundation are set in a way that is competitive, equitable, and consistent with our values and culture. The anticipated annual pay range of this position for applicants based within the United States is US$62 to US$96 with multiple individualized factors, including cost of living in the location, being the determinants of the offered pay. For applicants located outside of the US, the pay range will be adjusted to the country of hire. We neither ask for nor take into consideration the salary history of applicants. The compensation for a successful applicant will be based on their skills, experience and location.
