Hillcrest Hospital has an established Forensic Nursing Services Department that provides 24/7 specialty care response for pediatric and adult sexual assault/abuse, domestic violence and other forms of maltreatment. The forensic nurses complement the Emergency Department's level II trauma service with front line response and injury prevention programs. The forensic nurses, or Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE), are experts in obtaining and documenting history, medical legal examinations, crisis intervention and precise evidence collection.

  • Our Center for Workplace Violence Prevention and Caregiver Well-Being sets caregiver safety as a priority, identifying, reporting and responding to incidents and providing safety resources. 

This is a PRN position that will require floating between campuses. Mileage will be reimbursed. Floating locations include Hillcrest, Fairview and Main Campus. A caregiver in this position works 32 hours per month. Times include 7:00pm to 3:00am or 7:00pm to 7:00am.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

  • Participate in on call schedule, as determined by SANE coordinator and responds to the designated facility within one hour. 
  • Complete clinical experiences as determined by the SANE course and coordinator (e.g., Civilian observer with Cleveland Police or Cleveland Sex Crimes, Cleveland Rape Crisis Center, Domestic Violence/Child Advocacy Center, Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Family Justice Center (Cleveland), and Courtroom trial experience). 
  • Perform speculum exams and/or pediatric assessments under the supervision of a LIP. 
  • Utilize thorough knowledge of anatomy and body structures and mechanisms and patterns of injury. 
  • Utilize a thorough knowledge on collecting and managing forensic evidence with a Sexual Assault Exam Collection (SAEC) kit and a Drug Facilitated Sexual Assault kit (DFSA). 
  • Interact and collaborate with medical and nursing staff, law enforcement, prosecutors, protective services, advocates, and other agencies as needed. 
  • Work independently and demonstrate organizational and time management skills. 
  • Travel to other Cleveland Clinic Facilities as needed. 
  • Attend continuing education as a sexual assault nurse. 
  • Utilize appropriate camera use regarding photo documentation of injuries and/or evidence. 
  • Provide court testimony as needed. 
  • Participate in community awareness programs and professional organizations. 
  • Utilize current knowledge base regarding legislation and government programs and best practice standards of care. 

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • Complete a IAFN approved SANE Adolescent/Adult course within 60 days of hire 
  • Complete a IAFN approved SANE Pediatric course within One year of hire for incumbents hired after April 1, 2018 
  • Current state licensure as Registered Nurse (RN) 
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) through American Heart Association (AHA) 
  • If in an ED, Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) through American Heart Association (AHA) upon hire or within one year of beginning work in the Emergency Department 
  • One year of recent RN work experience 

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing 
  • Trauma, Women’s Health, or Pediatric experience

Physical Requirements:

  • Light Work - Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly (Constantly: activity or condition exists 2/3 or more of the time) to move objects. Even though the weight lifted may be only a negligible amount, a job should be rated Light Work: (1) when it requires walking or standing to a significant degree; or (2) when it requires sitting most of the time but entails pushing and/or pulling of arm or leg controls; and/or (3) when the job requires working at a production rate pace entailing the constant pushing and/or pulling of materials even though the weight of those materials is negligible.
  • Note: The constant stress and strain of maintaining a production rate pace, especially in an industrial setting, can be and is physically demanding of a worker even though the amount of force exerted is negligible.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Gloves, Masks, Gowns as needed.
