Senior Associate, Capital Markets

Company

Orenda is a developer, owner, and operator of energy infrastructure projects.  We are on a mission to make the grid more efficient and resilient through renewable energy projects and our proprietary asset management technology. Our team handles the end-to-end process of development from early-stage origination, to construction, financing, and operation of our projects.

We are a dynamic, Brooklyn-based company at the forefront of a new industry. We are seeking highly motivated and incredibly talented individuals who wish to contribute to our important mission.

Role

The Capital Markets department is responsible for sourcing capital, executing transactions, and maintaining long-term relationships with Orenda’s financing partners. The team oversees project M&A, project financing, tax-equity, and strategic transactions on behalf of the Company. Rather than relying on third-party advisory firms, the Capital Markets department is designed to execute transactions directly for Orenda, leveraging our deal experience and our deep understanding of the NY battery energy storage system (“BESS”) market.

The Senior Associate will play a pivotal role in the Capital Markets function, acting as the “deal-manager” for our M&A and financing transactions.

Key Responsibilities for the Senior Associate will include:

  • Deal Leadership: we’re looking for a deal “Quarterback” who is ready to take responsibility for every function required to execute our transactions. You will be considered the point-person on every deal on which you’re staffed, both with internal and external stakeholders. The Senior Associate will benefit from guidance and mentorship from the Head of Capital Markets, but will be expected to fully-own their processes
  • Timeline Management: Ensuring transaction milestones / deadlines set out by our management team are executed on schedule, despite inevitable challenges
  • Presentation Deliverables: Function as the lead writer on Confidential Information Memorandums (“CIMs”) and Lender Presentations
  • Financial Modeling: You will both engage in financial modeling directly, as well as manage the work product of our analysts. The Senior Associate should have superior competency in financial modeling of various types (specifically related to asset-level operations, project finance and equity), and will be expected to deliver easily understood models with 100% accuracy
  • Coordination with Internal Teams: to deliver essential information to our capital partners, you will interface with virtually all teams in the Company, including Project Origination, Project Execution, and Asset Management
  • Coordination with External Consultants: g. independent engineers, market consultants, tax advisors and legal counsel to complete third-party reports and manage Q&A
  • Q&A Review: Ensuring all information communicated by the Company is both an accurate and an appropriate representation of the project(s) and/or the Company
  • Closing Checklist Management: The Senior Associate must have a complete understanding of all required objectives required to close our transactions; you will actively manage the completion of those objectives
  • Support on Development-Level Issues: problem-solving unforeseeable issues that may arise; we are looking for a professional with a “team-mentality” who is willing to roll their sleeves up whether an objective is (or isn’t) part of their job description
  • Mentorship: supervise and train our analysts so to ensure 100% accuracy in our work products, as well as their continued growth as professionals

The Senior Associate will also be expected to play a support role for the following functions:

  • Relationship Sourcing & Management
  • Commercial Negotiation
  • Transaction Structuring
  • Documentation Review
  • Documentation Negotiation
  • Resolving Key Obstacles to Closing

This position will report directly to the Head of Capital Markets, and (subject to their competencies) will be given latitude to work on responsibilities well beyond their title.

Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor's degree required, ideally in the areas of Finance, STEM, or comparable path of study; Graduate degrees are a plus
  • Company Experience: 5+ years of experience with an investment bank, project finance lender, developer (capital markets role), or tax equity investor. The Senior Associate need only have experience in one of the areas of M&A / project finance / tax equity, but will be expected to eventually master all 3
  • Transaction Experience: The Senior Associate should have played an active role in numerous live transactions (not including portfolio management). While the typical responsibilities of financial modeling, presentation building, etc. will be valued, prior experience with transaction management / leadership is strongly preferred
  • Sector Experience: Power & utilities, infrastructure and / or oil & gas strongly preferred. Prior knowledge of BESS technology / BESS markets is encouraged, but not required

Skills and Attributes

The ideal candidate will exhibit the following key qualities:

  • Thoughtful: prioritizes a good result over a quick result
  • Methodical: takes an organized, process-oriented approach to their work to ensure a superior end-product
  • Resilient: maintains the ability to think clearly and deliver results despite tight deadlines and changing circumstances
  • Hard-Working: this role will require dedication to achieve our objectives
  • Self-Starter: you will be expected to proactively identify (and complete) the tasks needed to achieve your objectives
  • Adaptable: able to manage a multitude of responsibilities at once. Problem-solving will also be a key aspect of your role
  • Transparent: a “straight-shooter” who provides honest and direct (but tactful) feedback
  • Collaborative: maintains a constructive approach to their work, both with team members and with capital partners
  • High EQ: while not critical for your near-term responsibilities, emotional intelligence will be essential to your long-term growth as a relationship manager
  • Ethical: never compromises ethics for the benefit of results; always considers the long-term
