The STEM Student Success Initiative (SSSI) in the Office of Undergraduate Education is hiring two Academic Advisor 2s. One position will work in the College of Arts and Sciences with the Data Analytics major and one in the College of Engineering with the Electrical and Computer Engineering major.

The Academic Advisor 2s will foster student success by identifying and implementing proactive strategies that help students stay on track to fulfill their educational goals. They will advise students on university policy and procedures, program and degree requirements, and related academic matters. Advisors will consistently direct students to appropriate resources and work collaboratively with others to resolve student issues. Advisors assist in student orientations for their departments/colleges and participate in graduation-related work, including commencement rehearsal and lineup. They may teach the student survey course and may serve on department/college committees as assigned.

Essential Duties

  • Provides and documents one-on-one advising to undergraduate students regarding degree and program options, academic standards, general education, prerequisite requirements, and major courses for specific degrees, including course sequencing. Reviews and processes add/drops, withdrawals, and program changes. Advises students dealing with academic, probationary, and financial concerns and consistently directs students to appropriate resources to ensure students receive holistic support. Understands connections between academics and careers and provides robust advising across academics, career and basic needs while making appropriate referrals to experts. Consults and/or elevates outstanding matters to more senior staff.

  • Assists in student orientation by supporting logistics of orientation programming and preparing and presenting orientation session materials and present presents orientation materials.

  • Teaches student survey course. Utilizes established materials, with few alterations, to convey content effectively. Grades course assignments and provide evaluative feedback to students.

  • Under regular direction, may initiate, lead, participate in, or collaborate on simple to moderate special projects within unit or with external partners. Identifies opportunities for projects and recommends to management. Engages in professional development and participates in unit and university-level opportunities.

Qualifications

Required:

Master's degree required. Able to readily articulate specific information on course content, programs, and policies, including specialty areas. Able to tailor advising interactions to accommodate or incorporate student's personal/cultural identity. Able to apply theory to advising practice. Understands and follows FERPA guidelines and engages in discussions with stakeholders.

Desired:

1-2 years of experience in academic advising. Able to effectively build relationships with students and possesses adaptive relational skills. Demonstrates advanced communication skills; able to provide detail and depth to information conveyed. Able to discuss relevance of program to student's goals. Able to assess a student's potential for success in a field of study and make appropriate referrals. Demonstrates and applies historical knowledge of the academic advising profession, including General Education, enrollment plans, changing demographics, etc. Knowledge of university policies. Basic knowledge of student career development, especially in STEM fields.

Additional Information:

The pay range for this job profile is $44,400 - $58,000. The offer for this position will fall within this range based on internal equity, unit's available budget, and the candidate's qualifications.
