Focus of the Role
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Java Engineer to join our team supporting a key Telstra initiative. This role demands a strong background in Back end, API, Security, CI/CD tools, containerization and cloud platforms
What You’ll Do
Platform Engineering - Software Engineering & IT develops and maintains Telstra's software and IT systems, working on some really cutting-edge technologies.
Build and enhance full-stack applications, backend services, APIs, and internal tools
Develop automation to simplify workflows, integrations, and repetitive engineering tasks
Improve CI/CD pipelines, test automation, and release reliability
Contribute to production support, incident resolution, and long-term fixes
Design reusable components, templates, and shared solutions
Embed security, performance, and reliability considerations into solutions by design
Collaborate with engineers and stakeholders to uplift delivery practices
About You
Over all 3-5 years of experience in Software Engineering
3 years of strong experience building backend services – Java, Spring boot, Microservices
Experience designing and consuming REST APIs and integrations
Ability to write clean, testable, and maintainable code
Good experience in CI/CD tools like GitLab/Bamboo/Jenkins
Good experience with AWS and/or Azure
Good understanding of Authentication & Authorization protocols (e.g., JWT, OAuth), including certificate handling and usage to ensure robust application security.
Working knowledge of Docker and Kubernetes for application runtime
AI-Assisted Development
• Hands-on use of GitHub Copilot or equivalent AI coding assistants
• Ability to write clear, structured prompts for code, automation, APIs, and infrastructure
• Sound judgement when reviewing AI-generated output
Good to have:
Experience building automation for workflows, integrations, and internal tooling
Hands-on experience improving CI/CD pipelines and test automation Cloud & Runtime Fundamentals)
Scripting skills (Python, Bash, PowerShell, or similar)
Practical understanding of observability, logging, and monitoring
Behavioral & Ways of Working
Strong problem-solving skills with a structured and pragmatic approach
Clear and effective communication across technical and non-technical stakeholders
Comfortable thinking beyond standard solutions and experimenting responsibly
Passionate about learning new technologies and applying them in real-world scenarios
