Summary

ME Intern

Varex has multiple product lines that are seeking engineering student interns interested in supporting initiatives to improve cleanliness and contaminant detection of high-vacuum components, as well as supporting the release of new equipment and processes into production use.

Job Description

What You Will Do

You will work closely with an R&D or Product Engineering team mentor to support the following, or similar, initiatives:

  • Design fixtures using SolidWorks as needed to support cleaning and/or evaluation of high-vacuum components.
  • Program and develop software interfaces for collection, evaluation, and presentation of data collected by new evaluation systems (programming languages and environments will likely include Python and/or LabVIEW).
  • Present designs, programming solutions, and findings to cross-functional teams for design review and feedback.
  • Support ordering and assembly of designed fixtures (if needed).
  • Create operator interfaces and process instructions.
  • Test and validate fixtures and control processes.
  • Support laboratory testing and analytical metrology activities, including operation of measurement equipment, collection of experimental data, evaluation of measurement systems, and analysis of test results.
  • Report progress to the Engineering Manager on a weekly basis.

Skills

  • Demonstrated use of the scientific method. This is key!
  • Experience with LabVIEW and/or Python for automation and controls.
  • Experience running test plans, collecting high-quality data, and analyzing results.
  • Experience using laboratory measurement, analytical, or scientific instrumentation.
  • Experience collecting, documenting, and analyzing experimental data.
  • Familiarity with laboratory test methods, measurement systems, and basic statistical analysis.
  • Experience with data visualization and reporting tools.
  • Some statistical experience for refining experimental data (beneficial but not required).
  • Experience with SolidWorks (beneficial but not required).
  • Ability to write technical reports.
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Willingness to design, build, and test your creations.
     

Specific/Advanced Skills That Would Set Candidates Apart in the Selection Process

  • Previous design and build experience.
  • Previous automation/programming experience.
  • Demonstrated design-for-manufacturing experience.
  • Six Sigma certification.
  • Technical writing experience in publications or technical manuals.
  • Structural and/or thermal FEA experience using ANSYS.
     

Education

  • Mechanical Engineering student with 2+ years of completed study.

Employee must be able to meet the following requirements with or without an accommodation.

  • Lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, or moving heavy equipment and/or supplies occasionally (1-33%).

  • Above-average agility and dexterity with the ability to hold, grasp and manipulate small parts and use hand and power tools occasionally (1-33%).
  • Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) and handle physical exertion, such as long periods of standing, walking, bending, crouching, stretching, reaching, repetitive motion, or similar activities.
  • Work environments includes: exposure to chemicals, electrical current, proximity to moving mechanical parts, repetitive hand motion, open flame, working from heights, uneven surface.
